I'm about ready to start loading ammo for a 416 Ruger I built on a Persian Mauser....same shoulder angle...same headspace gauge.

If necessary I'll start with data for 416 Taylor and work up but I know for a fact that others have been built ahead of mine.....just wondering if anyone has powder recommendations or loading data.

Seems like IMR/H 4350 would be a starting place.

if it were me, i would fireform some brass, get the case capacity, and compare that to the 416 remington, which is about what this is!!!

then start 10% under the bottom loads of the 416 rem

I'd also say it should be quite similar the the Rem Mag. Rel 15, Rel. 15 and finally Rel. 15. The 4350s should be too slow.

The 416 Dakota is a 404 Jeff based round with a bit more capacity and will support about 150'/sec faster loads......assuming one can actually handle them!!!!

I'm in agreement that the Rem Mag is a close sister and RL-15 and IMR-4064 will be the powders.....however it seems H-380 will also be tried!

I did get a PM from a guy in Texas stating that a Max load of H-414, would get about 2400fps from a 416 Ruger....he said to work up from 75 grains.

My dies from Hornady have been delayed and I still havent fired a shot so I cannot confirm this data.

Are the reamers readily available or who might do this for me. I have a Taylor I would like to have rebored for the Ruger.

I am not 100% sure but the 416 Ruger might be closer to my 416 B&M. Not sure, never paid much attention to the 416 Ruger, but the 416 B&M is a 2.25 inch cut down and formed Ultra case. If the Ruger is close to this you might be able to use some of my data to get started. I am having my best results in the short case with AA 2520 and WW 748. Which ended up being a surprise to me! But that is the top powders for the 416 B&M.

If you think capacities are close, check the Ruger and I will be happy to send load data to you to get started.

Michael

Frank,
The project is done and I wound up at 2,400 FPS and 83 grains H-414 behind a 400 grain slug.....heck of a lot of recoil I might add. This is a fabulous cartridge.

The chamber reamer is available if you want it as I'll not likely ever make another 416 Ruger.

I don't know the specs for the SAAMI recorded 416 Ruger but my reamer is the same shoulder angle as the .375 and uses the same headspace gauge....and the gaugeis also available.

Personally the 416 Ruger is preferable to the 416 Taylor as it's standard and a bit more wallup.

PM me if you're interested in the reamer and gauge.

Thanks for the offer on the reamer. I am not able to pull the barrel at this time since I am not at home where my gunsmith can do anything.
There isn't a single gunsmith here for me to turn to.
If I rented it from you it might be two or three months before I can get it back to you which I wouldn't care to do.
This is one of those fun projects I will be taking on so I will have to wait or buy it outright.
Tell me if the reamer will match the factory specs and ammo.
Frank

I don't know the factory specs....I've asked and get no replies......If someone can tell me the specs I can tell you if I can match that......and it'd not make sense to do a wildcat when factory rounds are available.
