454 Casull in a rifle loading ?

Bitman454 Casull in a rifle loading ?
Hey guys,
I've been reloading for rifle, handgun, and shotgun for over 40 years. I recently picked up a Ruger #1, that's been rebarreled for the 454 Casull. I shoot this caliber in a revolver. I'm assuming any load that's safe in my revolver should be fine in a long gun. I know the velocities should be greater out of a long barrel. However, is there anything I should be aware of or look out for. Just looking for a little insight. Thanks, Dave

p dog shooterJust shoot your revolver loads.
You could easily see a few hundred fps increase in velocity.

RapidrobIf it were my rifle, even the very strong Ruger #1, the brass would be the problem. Even though the pressure drops after a few milliseconds of bullet movement the "extra time" the pressure stays higher due to the longer bullet is in a barrel, I would drop the load down to start with and look for pressure signs as you worked up to the max pistol loads.
Just saying....
I've been reloading since '64 and would hate to see anyone get hurt because of failed pistol brass.

Brian CanadaWhat powder are you using?
I don't know about 454 Casull, but in 500 S&W mag rifle loads some shooters are going from fast pistol powders to Accurate 1680 or CFE BLK. I like the latter. Cleaner and maybe lower pressure. Maybe this helps. brian

theback40Look up Leverguns articles. They had one on the 454 in the Rossi 92. If a Rossi can take the loads he listed, a No 1 certainly can.

Lamarthe 454 has a maximum pressure map.
all the firearms ever made in 454 are built to take that pressure just fine.
23 February 2021, 06:56
KY NimrodThe max sammi pressure for the .454 is 65,000 CUP. Thats up there with a 300 Weatherby and higher than most rifle ammo. Single action revolvers like a Ruger or Freedom Arms are way stronger than many people understand. You don't really need to load this one up to "rifle" pressures...LOL. Might want to load it down a little....

georgeldYou'll find there's a hell of a lot more
recoil in the rifle. I sure did with a .45 Colt.

I was really surprised how much my 44mag Ruger 96 carbine recoiled.

BitmanThanks for all the replies.
Gives me a few things to think about.

bentaframeI have an encore MGM 454 barrel 20 " I use IMR 4227. There's loading info for it in the Hornaday magazine loading guide. Great 100 yd.+ deer gun. I shoot 260 gr bullets between 1600-1900 FPS the book shows there is still room to go. I got it because where I live all the farms are being subdivided and you need a short range gun to safely hunt them. It does kick at the high end but not near as bad as the 460 S&W it replaced. If you handload I would use a slower pistol type powder like 4227 or something like it

44 Mag recoil in rifle? Seriously?
Bitman:
Write down the load you use. I can check it with QuickLoad for long barrel.

p dog shooterI was surprised how sharp the recoil was in that little carbine.
Stock design or what ever it is really not very pleasant.
So yes seriously.
I have other pistol caliber carbines they are a joy to shoot.
That little Ruger is not

I agree. But it is carbine issue, not caliber issue at all.
For example: my friend has ZKK rifle in 7x64 caliber. That stock geometry or whatever I don't know is the reason I will not fire that rifle again (I have .585 Hubel Express, but when firing it, you expect something extraordinary, not with common 7x64 rifle). Just jumping from hands up, don't know how to describe accurately. On the other hand, I can shoot my .375 H&H CZ 550 with one hand, no recoil at all.
It is interesting stuff how change in stock geometry, wood grain or whatever make such a difference.

BitmanJiri,
The Ruger #1 has a 22" barrel. I've not shot it yet, but this is what I've loaded to try.
Hornady new brass
CCI S.R. Mag. primer
Win. 296 powder @ 35 gr. 35.5 gr. and 36 grains.
Hornady 240 grain XTP-Mag bullet
C.O.L. 1.750
I also loaded a few rounds with 14 grains of Unique for plinking.
Thanks, Dave

BitmanWow Jiri,
That quick load is really something.
Thanks, it's greatly appreciated.

JiriYou are welcome.
QuickLoad notice: It is just simulation software. Doesn't count with different twist rates, primers, whatever.
I found it pretty accurate for some powders (VVN 105, 110...) and pretty inaccurate for another. Especially those with surface "nitroglycerine treatment", such as Alliant RL17 (Reload Swiss 60). Works for me good also for Hodgdon H110, which is now the exactly same as W296 (or W296 is H110). Developed a lot of loads for my .500 S&W revolver. It is absolutely accurate, but for standard primers only (CCI 200).
For example 44gr of H110 under Woodleigh 400gr bullet is estimated by QuickLoad for 1638 fps, I chronographed 1644 fps.
For RL-17 and .375 H&H with Swift A-frame, it is completely out. Because of it can't simulate that surface coating effect.

jeffeossojust use your revolver loads - the ruger #1 or #3 can take more, but don't --
h100/296 loads will surprise you
i had to tear down a bunch of 45 colt loads, as they where loaded for a blackhawk, and i got a 625-9 ... while it can take a +p once in a while, a couple hundred rounds would have ruined my favorite gun

BitmanJiri,
Just letting you know. I ordered the Quick Load software yesterday. I've heard of it for years, but never really knew what it did.
Thanks

sjmciBitman, I loaded some 454 rounds using the same Hornady 240 XTP and 35 grs 296. They chronod 2060 ft/sec from my Rossi 92. No issues, but the little carbine does jump!
01 March 2021, 05:11
Steve E.One of the most accurate bullets in my Rossi 92 is the Lee 300 gr gas checked bullet coupled with a near max load of H110 it does buck some. I did put a better recoil pad on it though.
