Hi,

I am looking for load information for a drilling with a rifle barrel chambered for 9.3x82r also known as a 360 Nimrod. The gun is not nitro proofed.

Thanks

This cartridge is listed and loads with available nitro propellants can be calculated with QuickLoad.

Sellier and Belliot manufactures a .364 193 grain bullet for the 9.3x72 R cartridge which originates also in the blackpowder age. Also H&N offers a lead bullet with the same parameters.

Cases are available from Horneber or though Reimer Johannsen Jagd.

Possibly someone here can give a hint regarding the best nitro substitute for blackpowder.

Duk,

Thanks. I do not have Quickload. I know where to get cases, dies and bullets.

If you indicate me a powder, I'll be happy to do the QL calculation for you. This should at least give you a good indication on pressure and speed to be expected.

The 4th Edition of Cartridges of the World has some info on the 9,3x82R

It shows a factory load with a 193gr bullet at 1640fps.

It also says to use 38-55 data when working up reloads.

Typo corrected, to 38-55.

The published loads by DEVA (German Ballistic Institute) for the 9.3x72 R are usually based on Vihta N140/N540, N550 but also mention one load with SR 4759.

Both cartridges are quite similar and were developed for blackpowder.

This is what QuickLoad comes up with, the pressure is below the maximum of 26000 PSI:

 Patrone : 9.3 x 82 R (360)
Geschoss : .366, 193 grain, SEB SPFN 2951
Patronenlänge L6 : 3.335 inch or 84.71 mm
Lauflänge : 23.6 inch or 600.0 mm
Pulver : Vihtavuori N140

DUK, You are gentleman. Thanks for posting the load info. If you can. I would be interested in seeing IMR 3031 for this cartridge.

I ordered the dies from CH4D yesterday. Also the cases. Buffalo Arms has the 193 grain bullets.

I sent a chamber cast to Ace Dube. He is making a 22 Hornet insert with 6" barrel for me that will fit the 9.3x82r chamber.

So, this old drilling will be hunting again.

Thanks...

I found some loading data for the 38-55 suitable for the Ballard, Stevens44, Tip Up actions, Colt Lightnings, and Marlin 1881's.

With a 243gr cast bullet they show 28.0gr of IMR 3031, velocity 1485fps.

For stronger actions, the Marlin 1893 and Winchester 1894 they show, with a 255 jacketed bullet:

32gr of IMR 3031 for 1696fps.
33gr of IMR 3031 for 1764 fps.
And
35gr BL-C2 for 1559fps.
37.5 gr BL-C2 for 1638fps.

Hope this helps.

Let us know how it works and be careful. Loading density is 76.5% with 41 grain or less.

DUK,

Thanks again. I will be sure to use some filler. Will let you know how it goes.

If you use filler just be sure it is COMPRESSED between the powder and the bullet.

Either a foam plug or dacron polyester will work best.

I use both with my double rifles.

My wife and I hunt with Drillings all the time.

They make great hunting guns.
