Oh come on Jeffe. Listing the obsolete 45-70 and leaving off the 30-06 Springfield! Come on get real. The 45-70 was a flop from the day it hit the field in the Trap Door.

Maybe not

Most people who own and use rifles also shoot shotguns, at least occasionally. Yet there are millions of shotgun shooters the world over who have never owned or used a rifle. Since the 12-ga. is generally the most popular gauge the world over, closely followed by the 16 ga., it is probable that the 12 ga. is the most widely used cartridge ever!

They were or are all great! It's just that some enjoy a shorter adulation by loonies. If I were to consider which had the greatest influence I'd say the .45-70, .22 RF, 30-30, mebbe the .30-40 Krag. Not in any particular order, and not for what they are, but what they led to.

These or their offspring will perform any task as well as any others. For example the .460 will thump DG as well as .600 NE IMO.

But greatness is hard to define here. The 7x57 is great, and the 8x57 spurred the development of the /06. I was going to include PPCs but didn't know if they had ever been factory.

I based mine on the ability of the cartridge to "sum up" in performance a large group of other chamberings or being parent to offspring that span a broad range of performance.

.22 LR, 7x57, .375 H&H. With these and possibly a .22 centerfire, you are good to go wherever. Of course you also could throw the .30-06 in the mix, or replace the 7x57 with it. I could hunt the rest of my life with a .22, .220 Swift, 7x57 and .375, but I don't want to. Actually most discussions of calibers are meaningless,as there are so many useful ones and the arguments are just mental exercise.

What Vapodog said, and to his list I would add the 20mm cannon and RPG's. Big Grin

Actually I would have to say the 284 win, 8X57, 30-06, 308 win 375 H&H and 338 WM simply because of the many other great cartridges that they grandfathered.

And a few additional ones that are really stand outs on their own (at least to me) are:

22lr
223 rem
22-250
6mm ppc
257 improved
6.5/284
270 Win
7-08 win
280 Rem
30-30 Win
300 WSM (I know, I know, hasnt earned its place among the greats yet, but I predict that it will.)
8X68s
338-06
358 winchester
35 Whelen
358 Norma
376 Steyr (same disclaimer as 300 wsm)
416 Rigby
44 Mag
45 Lc
and 45-70 (naturally)

OK, which greats have I forgotten? Big Grin

Hell othe Campfire:
The greatest cartridge? Lets see, What do we mean by greatest? The most used, the most useful, the most historically important? The largest in common use? We need to define our terms a little better to name the "greatest" cartridge.
My list:

1. all 22 rimfires (but not the .22mag.)short long and long rifle ( plus .22CB) These are the ones most of us started with and are still great for practice and plinking. These are FUN and cheap can be had almost anywhere and are quiet. If I were limited to one gun it would be a .22.

2. .38 special. Plenty of power for defense, plentyful, again cheap, anyone can shoot it. The standard round for the police for many years.

3. 30-06 does anything asked of it, easy to load, not too bad to shoot if you are not used to it, found world roung, part of the arsonal of freedom. And I don't have one ina hunting rifle.

4. .45 ACP Same as the 30-06 but not easy to shoot. Makes a satifying boom. Saved my dad's life in the Philippines during the unreat of the 1940's. The ony problem I have is getting the cartridges to headspace correctly when reloading.

5. 44-40 and 44 Smith and Wesson (Russian and American). Gave the average person the ability to have a gun for defense and hunting. Having a rifle and handgun in the same cal. made things easier, less to carry on foot or horseback.

6. 10, 12 and 16 gauge shotgun shells, perfect for so many things. Anyone can shoot them. Game getters. About the only guns as useful as a .22 rimfire.

7. What ever the Martini Rifles for Great Britain were chamberd for. Opened up the world. Made large game hunting a reality. Easy to reload. Still around and being used.

I tried for the top ten, but these were all I could justify off the top of my head.

8-whatever, The cartridge that you are using and enjoy. The one that you just have to have to complete your battery. The ones that you will give to your grandchildren. These are the greatest cartridges of all because you are passing down a heritage of freedom.

22 rf without a doubt.

30-06, it was the first successful smokeless round on the battlefield (no offense to our allies, and to our continental friends, well, you lost), and transcended that role in the sporting fields as well.

375 H&H, possibly the only hunting cartridge that really is in a class of it's own. Think about it, what other sporting caliber has had only one cartridge universally chosen to launch bullets of it's caliber? What other chambering is universally considered suitable for all big game?

44 magnum, it ushered in the world of handgun hunting, and has always been considered a good choice for such use.

45 acp, It's worked well from day one, and it is another example of a chambering that really is the only one chosen for it's caliber.

12 ga, the general purpose do it all shotgun chambering.

Interesting, excepting the 44 mag, all the great ones have been around about 100 years.

You guys pick too many cartridges.

Clearly for the rim fire, it has to be the .22lr, it is just a wonderful, useful rifle and pistol round.

For Revolvers: The 44 RemMag, load it up or load it down, and you can shoot target, hunt, or use it for serious protection. There a bunch of fine pistols for it, from light five shooters to heavy weight hunting pieces.

For Autoloading Pistols: The .40S&W, does for the autoloader what the .357Mag does for the revolver. Nice balance between capacity and throw weight, and controlable by most shooters. Again, there a bunch of really nice pistols available for it.

For Centerfire Rifle: The 9.3x62. It can do it all; granted it is a compromise, but so are most things in life. It isn't what I'd pick for elephant, but it would suffice in a pinch and for most everything else, it will work very well. From elephant to white tail, that is a pretty versatile cartridge. And loaded hot, you don't give anything away to light magnums out to 300 yards using 250BT's. An amazing cartridge.

For shotguns: 12 gauge. It will do it all. And I'd probably take my old 1100, which shoots buck and slugs well and has taken 23/25 skeet which is as good as I can shoot. Kudude

There others I like, but I could get by nicely with those. Kudude

Legistine actu quod scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Ok, why not ... here's my list:

Pistol Cartridge Greats:
22 LR
44 Mag
45 ACP
30-30 (EABCO & T/C)

Rifles
22 LR
30-06 Spfd
300 WinMag
375 HH
416 Rigby
458 Lott
50 BMG

Shotgun
12 ga

The 30-30 makes my list as a great pistol cartridge. It's a fine round in it's own right, but with the right attention and loads, can really shine from a T/C for deer and still remain pleasant to shoot.

I'm listing three rifle cartridges in the 30 - .375 caliber ranges, but I really feel if you own one, you can generally get by (not do well, mind you, but get by) without the other two ... expecially if you own a .416 for anything you don't feel "good" about hunting with a .30 cal. I do like and have a lot of respect for all three of those listed, but I personally adhere to the .300 win / .416 Rigby option instead of the one-planet/one-gun theory.

If I just had to absolutely narrow the list down to one cartridge and one caliber. For pistols I'd say .44 Mag, and rifles I'd have to say .416 Rigby. That .416 will kill anything any other caliber can kill just as dead as it can.

Is someone going to put some sort of Excel spreadsheet or chart together or something with some distribution graphs? That would be pretty neat to see.

I may have missed it, but all this talk of great magnum cartridges and no mention of the 30 and 35 Newtons? If he and Winchester could have gotten along, how would the cartridge landscape be different today?

I think the standard 300 mags are great, and love my 358 Norma, but Newton invented these 30+ years before anyone else thought to copy his designs.

Without doubt the .22lr. Like they say at McDonalds, Billions and Billions shot.

Next pick your favorite smokeless powder centerfire and argue to your hearts content about which is the best one because it depends more on what you are familiar with rather than any logical discussion.

Then the 12 ga.

In centerfire rifle i can make a good case for the 338-06 as having a wide range of bullets of fine quality available in weights and sectional densities that make sense in North America/Canada.

In centerfire pistol, i vote for the 10mm Auto, which is about the limit for blowback semiautos that one can afford.

In centerfire revolver, nothing beats the 44 Mag for flexibility and range of legitimate application.

King of them all, however, is the 22 Long Rifle which EVERYONE can shoot to their capability, costs pennys, fills the pot and is just plain fun.

1) 6.5 x 55. Nothing invented since has improved on its ability to kill animals up to 300 lb.

2) 8 x 57. It is the mother of rimless cartridges. Its as good as or better than almost all of them (6.5 x 55, 7 x 57 may beat it).

P.S. Some of you guys might as well copy and paste a reloading manual.
