Can the Russian ammo be fired in a .308" barrel safely? My Mosin-Nagant mod 91-30 bore is .301", groove .3135". The Russian bullets mic. .3105". I'm considering re-chambering a 30-30 handi-Rifle to this cartridge. I realize I can neck the case down and reload with .308 bullets but I would also like to shoot the surplus military ammo. The case neck OD of a loaded a 30-30 round is .329" and a 7.62X54R is .332".

Can this be done or will I be unable to shoot the surplus ammo in a .308 barrel? Thanks...

Jon

This question would best be addressed in the gunsmithing forum.

I should think trying to stuff a bullet down a barrel that is .020 too small for it is askin' for trouble. Pressures would be astronomical. Just my opinion. I'd not try it...

FrownerPersoally I don't think a general yes or no answer can be given.Although I have put numbers of .310 diameter bullets down .308 tubes it was done with caution and close observance to effects. Doing this with military loads, which really vary, may not be considered prudent. Tested handloads is another story. I guess the question that presents itself ,at least to me, is why??? bewilderedroger
