It's due time for visual satisfaction, I thought. Muzzleflash is what I need!
I've got a TC with a 14" .223Rem bbl, but I get next to no muzzleflash when I fire cartridges loaded with Vihtavuori N133.
The question: which powder does deliver good muzzle flash?

I get humongous muzzleflash with SRB 118. It is no longer available so far as I know, but might be known under a different name...

I know it is much like WC-846 in burning characteristics, so you might try some of that.

(I do NOT find muzzleflash to be somethng I want, but have lots of that powder, so guess I'll have lots of flash for some time to come.)

Try BLC2. With a slight overcast, the field of view should be nice and orange!

I'll agree with JAL on the H335. I got huge fireballs with it in a 10" XP-100 in 221. I guess that's why Mike named it the "Fireball".

H335 gives me a pretty large muzzle flash in my 22" barrel .223rem. and 18" Ruger Mini-14. It should be awesome in a 14" barrel.

The brightest flashing stuff I've seen is some I bought from Bartlett's years ago named "PSA." Supposedly it was a batch of Chinese powder made for Accurate to sell as 2230. It had no flash suppressant and was rejected by Accurate for that reason. Great shooting stuff. I don't think he has it any more. Wish I'd bought a bunch more when it was available.

During late night insomnia some nights, I will go out in the garage and do some loading of ammo, and then will go about 2 miles done the road, to where I am on BLM land and shoot a few shots, to test for recoil or too see if it is too hot or not....

But in doing so, which is usually with a 223 case.....at 2 am I can tell you hands down, you want to turn night time into day time in an area about the size of a good sized living room, then use H 335.....

BLC2 will not give you the pyrotechnics that H 335 will give you in pitch black...

I really can't see where H 335 would have any military application with that big of a blast of muzzle flash....

But you want lights and flash in the dark, H 335 is your powder!

I used to have a 16" contender, and with malaysian milsurp the fireball was the size of a watermellon. It was also horendous muzzleblast.

Curious is the fact than in my 20" handi-rifle, the same ammo is quite tame.

To those that ask why, well I don't think you'd understand dancing

Yep, your right, I spend alot of time and effort trying to reduce muzzel flash in all of my firearms.

Is this just "big dick syndrome" ? because it certainly wont help your shooting ability and will probably hinder it, especially if a quick follow up shot is required.

To all who replied and understood: thanx a lot for the advice. Next saturday I'll be shopping for H335, and I'll let you know how much fun I had shooting it!

To those who questioned my motivation: I'm a pretty good shot both at pistol and rifle, and when I need accuracy (for use at a match or even when merely training), I use pretty mild loads.
It's just: sometimes you want to see roaring flames, sometimes you need smoke belching from your barrel. Sometimes you want NOISE! Just because its FUN!

Then there is the after-burner system where you shoot thru a container of black powder.
But maybe your not old enough for that yet.

When I grow up, I might try that Afterburner-system. Sounds like fun!

Until then, I did try H335. And it lived up to my expectations. I think I never saw a brighter flash than this stuff creates. Scope picture turned WHITE when I fired...in my 14"BBL the muzzleflash was at least a foot, or even 1 1/2. The blast was not that bad though, and I was surprized that I got but little recoil with cartridges loaded with 25grs of H335 and a Winchester 55grs FMJ (considerably less than I get with factory ammo). However, I do agree that this bright flash might wreck your concentration when shooting in a match or so. It's great for just having plain old fun, though!

Are you all getting the flash from H335 in short barrels only or does it happen in standard length ones?

Anything. A full charge of H335 will give a watermelon size fireball from a 24" .308 at dusk.
