I have gotten good accuracy from the .308 Win. and 30-06 with 220 gr. bullets and the 1 in 12" twist, contrary to whar the "egg-spurts" in the gun rags say. The load was quite hot, but in a Winchester model 70 in.308 Win., I reached 2300 FPS using Winchester brass, standard primers and W-760 powder. Bullet was the 220 gr. Sierra RN. I won't tell the load, but the starting load was 42.0 gr. Work up carefully, OK? Can't say what will work in .223. Maybe 55 gr. bullets. My .223 bolt gun has the early 1 in14" twist and doesn'y like anything over 50 gr. I'm seriously thinking of a rebarrel job. Paul B.

Lojack, You can use up to a 63grain bullet in your 223 with the 12 twist, If your thinking of a bullet for BR competition I'd stick with a 52-53gr. Flatbase bullet. Jay

A .223 Remington with a 1 in 12 twist should shoot most any of the common bullet weights offered in .224 caliber.
My own stock Remington Model 700 shoots reasonably well with anything I have tried, which includes 40, 50, 52, 55, 60 and even 70 grain bullets. I have not experienced any lack of stabilization of bullets even with some of the 55 grain plastic tipped bullets that are quite long.
Having said that, my gun shoots its best with either the 40 or 50 grain versions of the Nosler Ballistic Tip or the Hornady V-Max.
