I am just returning to Reloading after a 20 year break. Holly crap have components got expensive! That aside I an looking for reduced recoil loads for my .458 Lott. Using H=Trail Boss. None of the reloading manuals I have address such reduced recoil loads. Please share your experiences on this subject. I will also be trying to make some .375 reduced recoil loads as well. As always thank you for any and all assistance. DD If your parents didn't have any children chances are you won't either.

I load practically all cartridges with reduced loads using pistol and shotgun powder. UNIQUE is one of the best. For larger cases, I use KAPOK filler between the powder and bullet. There is no rocket science in it. Examples are I start with 12 grains in a 223 and work up to the level I want. I start at 45 grains in the 577 T.Rex. BLUE DOT, GREEN DOT and others work as well. I prefer UNIQUE because it is bulkier.

You can google the trailboss recommendations for creating your own loads.. iirc, it some fraction of a full case, but I don't recall the exact details opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? Or if you use H4895, use the H reduced load routine. https://www.ballisticstudies.c...ed%20load%20data.pdf

I use Trail Boss for reduced loads in this and other big bore cartridges. Very easy to find a start load, mark case where base of chosen bullet is when seated (I just lay the bullet along side the case), fill the case to that mark and weigh the charge, use 70% of that weight as a start. I use H4895 in reduction but mostly just use regular 45/70 data and be done with it. I shoot the 458 Win but the Lott is along the same lines and with a bit more powder you will achieve the same results. If it cant be Grown it has to be Mined! Unless you have enough Trailboss on hand, you will want to try a different powder. These days Trailboss is unobtanium and way, WAY over priced if you can even find any for sale.

I have used Herco (just because I had some) in the .458 Win. with 300-400 gr. cast bullets and it worked well. It isn't much different than Unique. C.G.B.

Dangerous Dave: For reduced loads in rifle cartridges, Accurate 5744 is great. https://shop.hodgdon.com/accurate-5744/ I use it for .585 Hubel Express reduced loads with great results. There is a rule for loading with 5744: Fill 60 % of usable volume of cartridge (case capacity - volume occupied by seated bullet) and you are fine. For really low velocities, such as subsonic, Trail Boss will work for you. Or here in Europe, we have Reload Swiss RS14. In both scenarios, fillers are not in use. If you give me bullet, coal etc., I can check loads for you in QuickLoad. Jiri

I've got a five-year-old 10th edition ADI (the makers of this powder?) guide that shows four Trail Boss loads for the 458 Winchester, if that's any use. Here are two 300gr Meister Lead Flat Point 19gr = 1187fps - 10,800 CUP; 23gr (max) = 1282fps - 13,200 CUP and 385gr cast lead round-nosed 16gr = 1020fps - 12,100 CUP; 19gr (max) = 1123fps - 16,100 CUP. They used Winchester cases and CCI 250 primers and listed the COL as 2.885" for the first bullet and 3.000" for the second, for what that's worth in a 458 Lott, or Winchester for that matter. I have proofread those numbers but, if you prefer, PM me an email address and I'll photograph the tables for you. (Overleaf I later discovered they had loads for 405 and 485-grain lead bullets, too, but I can't be bothered transcribing them just now).
