Going to start working loads for the 160 grain Speers. Was going to use IMR4350, but changed that to RL-22.

The only data I got is Lee 2nd Edition which gives;
Start 48.2 for 2564 fps
Max 52.9 for 2795

If everything follows the usual pattern with this rifle it will take heavier charges.

Now this CZ has a long throat, my seating with the Speer 160 is 3.35.

My work-up loads will be

49, 50, 51, 51.5, 52, 52.5, 53, 53.5. I dont think I'm off the Reservation yet.

Anyone have any imput with this bullet and RL-22?

I'd suggest that you cross-reference data for the .280 Remington as there is negligible difference in case capacity between the two.

RL-22 should be a good powder for the heavier bullets in the 7x64. But only tests done in your particular rifle will tell the tale of what works for it.

Do be aware that the lot-to-lot variation of RL-22 tends to be greater than most powders. You may find a significant difference between the lot you are using and whatever lot a given reloading manual might have used in its test rifle.

@jeff; So am I. Will be a couple weeks. Got to get a new tripod for the chrono and just finding the range time.

@Stone: Def +1 on the 280 Data. It's not much help other than a loose reference. This Rifle takes heavier charges and has a lot of freebore. So much that the Speer 160 contacts the rifling being seated only a 1/16 inch into the case neck. Some other data from seven years ago to show you what I mean about heavy charges.
None of these are max. Thanks for the heads-up with RL-22 lot differences. I dont think I will start hitting a mid-range load until 53 grains.

Im my Mannlicher-Schoenauer GK in 7x64 long throated also, I use (depending the case) 57 or 58 grs R22 with 160 grs Speer Mag-Tip bullets. For 280/ 2850 f/s and normal case life. This load or 58 / 59 grs IMR 7828 have been THE BEST in my rifle. By the way, these powders in this rifle gives me the best results with 160 / 175 grs bullets.

I know this is just another "loose reference", but given the scarcity of reloading data for European cartridges with a US powder brand, perhaps this might be of help...

RL22 is roughly equivalent to RWS R905 (and Norma MRP). All these powders come off the same production line (Bofors in Sweden). Although it is unclear whether the powders are exactly the same, it is generally accepted that you can use reloading data interchangeably - AS LONG AS YOU WORK UP DILIGENTLY FROM BELOW!!

That said, I cheked the RWS manual for 7x64 data, and the MAX load with R905 with 160-162 grs bullets is listed at 57-58 grs - depending on the exact bullet used.

I will start low as always. I had a feeling I would be starting on the low side, but I'll still start the load work up starting @49 grains.

My CZ 550 now likes 58 grains RL-22 with 160-grain Sierra Game Kings. No chrony yet but I expect 2700 fps (as for 56 grains H4831SC load previously worked up.) Brnos are typically strong so work up.

MRP and/or RL22 were my go to powders for the 280.
