In cutting down a rifle to make a short rifle the barrel cannot be shorter than 16 inches according to the BATF. An old boy wanted a 14 inch barrel so he cut in down to 16 inches and the drilled out and ported the first 2 inches. The BATF said since the ported section was not added but part on the barrel itself it was a 16 inch barrel!

As far as I know, barrel length is measured from the bolt face (closed) to the end of the barrel (crown). Less than 16" with a threaded add on doesn't cut it.

As long as the added portion is permently attached it well be legal. TC use to sell brakes for there 14 in barrels to bring them to over 16 inchs. They provided a cut out in the brake so one can fill it with weld. This is one of the most foolish parts of GCA of 34 there is. One can buy TC and other pistols chambered for the same calibers but one can not cut a rifle down. But is is still the law.

There was no added on junk! The original barrel was drilled to make the ported portion of the barrel. A

atf is fairly clear... if you close the action, drop in a rod,and measure from the non-mechanically removable porting of the barrel down, it must be 16" or longer to remain a non-class III that it's a "smoothbore" aint an issue. there were a number of shorty AK's brought in, with a welded solid brake on them, to make it to 16.125 jeffe opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? The rod is dropped in and measured at the end of the barrel.
