I recently loaded some 8x57js with 180gr. Nosler Ballistic tip bullet and 51gr of VV150 powder with a CCI mag primer they are accurate and deadly on the deer here in Texas. Anyone out there have an opinion?
Sounds like you have a good combo there,and no doubt that it will do the job. There have been many new .323 bullets brought out that Ive never tried since playing with my 8mil last,just might have to dust it off and give it another go around. The 8x57 is one of the most over looked hunting rounds there is,good to see people using and enjoying it. Luck to ya:::::Multi Vis
many here in Germany think that the best bullet option for the old 8x57IS is a 200grs RN.Look at the RWS one to see what I mean. With those the cartridge will perform best: minimal meat damage and max penetration.
I recently rebarreled a Rem 700 to 8mm-06AI and shot a W.Texas buck with it using a 185g Rem loaded (down) to about 2650 fps. Performance could not have been better, I am very pleased with this cartridge and sure the 8x57 would be the same !!!!! I have gradually gone full circle; after years of using lighter super fast bullets, I now prefer heavier slower bullets !!!! Bullet performance is more consistent without excessive meat damage....LR
My intent of building the 8mm-06AI was to have an elk rifle. If I ever get that opportunity, I will reload 200g Nos Part's to max velocity. I selected 8mm-06AI as a compromise between power and recoil and I just enjoy experimenting with wildcats.....LR
What kind of performance are you geting with your 8mm-06? do you know where I can find info on the cartrige? I am thinking of rechambering a rifle to it.
I used the 160 GS bullet with a case full of H414 this year and it performed about like a quad fifty on a herd of Affys....good bullet and good caliber. I have used the 175 Corelokt, 200 gr. Noslers and they work great. ONe of my favorite bullets is the 250 gr. Woodleigh...I have shot some big stuff with that one...
To 8mman and those interested in 8mm-06: Go to the shooters.com board, talk forum, then under the catagory of "wildcat" and go way, way back and there is several threads on 8mm-06 or any other wildcat you may be interested in . Two men by the names of Sambubba and Pick have a lot of good comments on the 8mm-06.
I just have not had the time (yet) to shoot and experiment with my 8mm-06AI very much. I shot the buck mentioned above using 53g of IMR4064 and Remington's 185g bullet which you can buy in bulk. I shot a few loads using H414 and the 200g Speer but ran out of time. 56g of H414 with 200g Speer clocked at 2675 fps with very mild pressure so I bet I can safely reach 2800 fps with 200g bullets (my gun has a 24" bbl). Ray, I know you speak highly of H414 for the 338-06 so I bet it will be THE powder for the 8mm-06AI with 200g bullets.......LR
