Hi all

Can anyone tell me what they think of Alliant Powders, I'm thinking of trying some Reloader 10 instead of ADI BM2 in my 22-250.
I had heard that it used to be Hercules and that it was a dirty powder.

Isn't ADI BM2 the same as our Benchmark over here? If so that is a pretty awesome 22-250 and clean burning. I haven't tried Reloader 10 but I hear raves about it in .204 so I'll be finding out just after the first of October.

Jaeg, I would think that you want a powder that will work up to a charge weight of about 35/36 grains with what ever bullet you choose to shoot. Therefore, pay close attention to the burning rate of the powder you choose. I think that R 10 is a bit fast for your application, but perhaps not if using the light 40 grain Nosler BT's for instance.

Suppose that Alliant was Hercules long ago. The RL powders could be new formulations but in any case RL 15 and RL 22 are very popular.

I have been using RL 10 for a couple of years now as its about right for the light (180) gr bullets I load in the 358 Win. It's a tiny bit faster than IMR's 3031.

As of late I am loading it in the 308 with 150's and that has raised the consumption here so I got a 5# bottle of it. It burns quite clean.

I tried it in the 219 Improved and it was about the same as 3031 but faster as I said. I stayed with 3031 in that rifle shooting 40 gr bullets.

I've had no complaints at all with the RL series of powders from Alliant.

Having said that I far prefer the H-380 and H-414 powders in the 22-250 as I just like ball powders.

If you want to try alliant try using RL-12 with the 45 and 50 grain bullets, the RL-15 with the 55 grain bullets and RL-19 with the 60 grainers.

I use a lot of RL-15. It performs great in my 22-250 and 7mm-08. I would recommend the RL-15 for your 22-250. The RL-10 is better suited to the .223 with the lighter bullets.

My 22-250 likes 36.0 grs. of RL-15 with the 53 gr. TSX.

I have used both, and if RL 10 is hard to come by or spendy in OZ, I'd just stick with your own Benchmark down there...

Both are equal in accuracy and velocity in my opinion...both doing a good job, but one exhibiting nothing superior over the other in the experiences I have had so far...

that has been in 223, 22.250, 243, 6mm Rem and 260 Rem and 7 x 57...

Jaeg ----- I shoot several pounds of Alliant powders each year. RL-15 with .416 Rem and Rigby. RL-19 with .340 Wby and .338 Lapua and others. RL-22 with .300 Win, .340 Wby, .358 STA, .257 Wby, .416 Rigby. RL-25 with .257 Wby, .270 WSM, .243 WSSM, .338 Lapua. I probably missed some, but off the top of my head this list is close. I also shoot several pounds of Hodgen and IMR powders each year but not as much as the Alliant's. I have shot it from Africa to Alaska and in between, it always does it's job when I do mine. The RL rifle powders are manufactured by Norma and sold here as well under their own brand. RL19 f.e. is Norma 204, the former is surprisingly less expensive here than the latter...

DUK, are you sure, that Alliant powders are produced by Norma? I thought, Norma, Alliant and Rottweil-powders are produced by Bofors, so that R19, N204 and R904 are nearly the same!

Alliant makes a great line of powders. They are high-energy, double-base powders, and high load density. I use Re19, which is slightly faster than Re22 - its is great in the 30-06 with 150 and 165 gr. bullets. Re22 also works well with the 30-06 and the like, especially with 165 to 180 gr. bullets. Re25 is a personal favorite. It is the best slow burner I've come across - that is, high energy/high density and slow burning. I've tried them all and chronograph every firing. Re25 consistently produces more velocity with less apparent PSI than virturally all the rest, including Retumbo. H870 is slow but the energy content is less than Re25. You need much more to get equivalent performance, resulting in more unpleasant blast and recoil. Re25 will compress well and even becomes useful in the 30-06 with 180 and heavier bullets.
