I have been measuring my bullets and determining the depth from the tip. I know this isn't the most accurate, What do I need to buy? I don't want to buy one thing and then need another. Give me the wall ball of wax. Thanks

Chain,

I use a set of calipers with the Stoney Point Comparator system. I love it.

You will need:
Calipers
Comparator with appropriate collet (.308 in your case)

You can also buy a kit that has the comparator in it with about 4 or 5 of the most commonly used collets.

In my opinion, this is the way to go.

Chain,

I would just get the basic comparator set (if it has the calibers you need). I bought the o.a.l. tool and ended up taking it back. I have found it is easier for me to take a fired case, flatten the case mouth to hold a bullet snugly and color the bullet with a marker, insert into my chamber and take the measurement from there. I can explain it in more detail if you want to do it that way. Anyway, I do that about five times, with five different bullets from the same box to get a good average.

Hey Chain, You may not need to buy anything if you already have a 0.001" capable Micrometer. Just go to this Thread on Bullet Seating and learn about converting from OCL to ODL.

Best of luck to you.

How did it turn out at 200 yards? What load were you shooting?

The 200 yard deal was met with mixed results. I shot some older loads I had around just to get trigger time. Then a young fella with a big ROY magnum with a brake on it set up next me. WOW I had to wait until he ran out of ammo, to start shooting again. What a cannon! I think he said it was a .340 ROY. He was getting ready to kill the biggest black bear in the north woods or so he said. I beefed up me 180 ACCUBOND and RL 22 load. I had good success at 74.5 gr the groups went to hell at 75 butit could have been the bear hunter, and then at 75.5 they came back a bit around 1"- 1 1/4" @ 100. But I was having trouble with my hold or wasn't shooting at the same time during the gusts of wind but my groups were 3" + @ 200. I was hoping for better, but I haven't shot much at 200. I also have to come up with a different target for 200 I had trouble with the bullseye at times. I was consistantly in the kill zone but it reinforced my self imposed limit of not shooting much beyond 300.

Hey chain, You are welcome. Once you get to doing it, it becomes second nature. Plus it allows you to adjust the Seating Depth without having to use any kind of wasted extra cost tool "thingy". rotflmo

Obviously Woods meant to say, "easier and more accurate" as well as "time proven". Big Grin
