I was given one of these, and wasn't sure it will work in our indoor range.

Others did not, including LABRADAR.

The small FX that attaches to the barrel of air rifles is very popular here, as well their rifles.

I am very pleased with its operation.

Labradar didn’t work in my range, and that is what the company told me before.

I was hoping to buy one of these units after I found some info online. Was waiting for someone in NZ to say they were the agent / importer etc. but nothing ever came up.
Then, the Garmin unit suddenly appeared on the scene and a couple of people here advertised that they would supply these, so I ordered one. All online info I have seen has been positive. Got an email yesterday saying I could expect delivery on Monday.

What I don’t understand is that in principle these all work on the same system.

LABRADAR just wouldn’t work.

I haven’t tried the GARMIN, but some here did and says it works great.

Today I test my FX chronograph with target 4.5mm air rifles.

Worked like a charm!

I have difficulty with these with OEHLER.

Much easier to set up too.

The cover becomes a base that the unit screws onto.

And for my setup at least, it works perfectly on my shooting table!

An update.

The only chronograph that ever worked at our underground shooting range was the OEHLER.

Nothing else worked.

Tried practically everything on the market.

The Oehler was finicky with smaller calibers, as I needed to shoot very close to the sky screens.

With this FX, it seems to measure all calibers.

Tried a target 17 caliber air rifle.

Measured that too.

I am impressed!

I’m surprised it measured the .177 pellets. My chronograph won’t measure .177 pellets and only about 2 of 5 from a .17 Remington. Thinking about getting one of these.

I am still at a loss how it works.

It sits next to the barrel??

It has no idea the size of the bullet, or pellet!

If it is a true radar it uses the signal reflected back off the projectile. My Labradar will work with BB's and .177 pellets. I use it out of doors with no structures near by.

That is why we are supposed to aim it at the target.

Labradar never worked here.

This one I am really impressed with.

I am using it with 22 rim fire testing now, and it has missed a sink shot!

As far as I know, the Labradar can be set to give velocities at distance, out to about 400m. This allows one to accurately determine the ballistic coefficient of the bullet.
I don't know if any of the other commercially-available doppler chronographs can do this (never seen it mentioned), but if they can't that might explain the issue. Labradar might be using a significantly more powerful beam with a wider dispersion angle, which would make it more prone to reflected waves from the edges of the tunnel.

Not sure of any of the above, it's just my hypothesis.

The Labradar will give down range velocities to a point, but it is a function of projectile diameter. I would really like to see a detailed explanation of how these new little guys work. I would bet they are using some really clever software to sort out the return signal data from the background noise.

Got the Garmin too.

Set them together, and velocity readings - from 6.5 Creemore, 308 Winchester and 338 Lapua Magnum.

Both displayed velocities with 7 fps maximum difference.

Mostly within 1-2 gps of each other.

Just wanted to add that per, I prefer the FX unit.

Has a much bigger display, and brighter.

Makes a big difference to my eyes.
