I have used 3031 in the past but have recently acquired several lbs of H335. Does anyone have any results using this powder with the 500gr bullet? Thanks, Bob

IMO it has a burnrate that is excellent for the 458 WM and you should try it to see how it works in your gun. I think it's as good or better than 3031 in that application. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I will load some up this evening and run them over the chrono over the weekend. Will report back. Thanks, Bob

VFR1: I can't say about H335, but I have had excellent results using H4198 and AA2230 for my .458WM. However, I am using 450 grain GS Custom Flat Nosed Solids and 450 grain North Fork Cup Point Solids, not 500 grain bullets. No powder compression and no signs of pressure with either load and both achieve 2230-2250 FPS. I use a Lee Factory Crimp for all loads. Federal 215 primers. Good Luck. RCG

RCG, AA2230 is real close to H335 on the burn rate chart. I loaded 75gr of this powder with a 500gr Hornady with no compression or compaction at all. Today I will order the Lee crimp die. Looking forward to running these over the chrono this weekend. Cheers

I used h335 ALOT 550 express, 470AR, 458AR, 416AR, and Neal uses it in the 550 Magnum. i would suggest that VFR's load data is fair for 2230, but not for h335, as that's a fairly robust LOTT load in h335 jeffe opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? Got to the range this morning for some .458 chrono work.. Range Closed until 1 Jul. Our range is on a AFSOC base and they are having an exercise. I thought about setting the chrono up on the golf course we live on but was afraid the golfers and neighbors might take issue. They don't visit AR and are unaware that the .458 presents no hazzard to anything larger than the squirrels Will take the rifle to the clays range this afternoon and use their pistol range. Bob

335 is a good powder for the 458. I only say good instead of great because it has a pretty good muzzle flash that goes with it. R-7 is an excellent powder does all that the 335 will do without the muzzle flash. Try 64 grains with 500 grain bullet. Since you already have the powder burn away and have fun. No luck in getting to the range this weekend to try the H335 loads. This Saturday for certain. On returning from the closed range Satruday, I checked the battery in the chrono--Dead Bob

Just got back from the range testing the H335 loads. The rifle is a Winchester Super Express, CRF, 22in bbl with a 1.5-5 VariXIII. With 75gr of H335 and 500gr Hornadies, the avg velocity of six rounds was 2072fps. Temp and humidity were both about 90. Easy extraction and no sign of excessive pressure. I would guess a 24in bbl would give an easy 2100fps. Bob

This is in line with published data. You could even go a couple grains more to 2150'/sec..... As it is you're ready to go after that buff you've always wanted. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Thanks Dog, Will try 76gr of H335 tomorrow. 2100fps out of a 22in bbl will sure be handy. Nay sayers tell me again, what is the problem with modern loads in the .458WM? Will my Brno 602 custom .460Wea kill buffalo any deader? It takes me 112gr of 4350 with the same bullet to get 2370fps. Another thing I like about H335 is that it measures so nicey through my Redding measure.

77gr H335 resulted in a six shot average of 2110fps. Sign at the bank on the way to the range read 94*. Easy extraction with normal appearing primers. So 2100fps is no problem with the .458.

VFR1...you're likely at the SAAMI limit for the 458 Mag...who knows but the experience is in line with published data. Some folks would continue to increase the charge until they noticed signs of pressure and then back off...you can do this if you wish but your comment on deader is exactly my feeling as well. RE: the temp at 94 deg..... It's not that that gets ya...it's the sitting on the dashboard of the truck.....it's sitting the gun in the sun until the barrel is untouchable....it's keeping rounds in the chamber after firing four fast shots..... I've had rounds taken from an auto that was soi hot I couldn't hold them in my hand...I mean very hot....these will raise pressures... Rounds kept in the pocket and out of the sun will not suffer pressures on hot days. Your efforts here are textbook and because of that I'd guess that if you did work up until you saw pressure signs you should then back down three grains. There's no reason you can't work up a full grain at a time if you wish to do so. On any account you're now ready to go out and tip over a buffalo..... /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Vapodog, I reached my goal of 2100fps and plan to go no further. This was more of an exercise inspired by the doubters than a means to an end. I have hunted only plains game in Namibia, but will be talking to my ranch owner/friend at the SCI meeting about buffalo in the Caprivi. I would rather use my 9.3x64 with 300gr SAF's or perhaps 320gr Woodleighs than the .458 or the .460. Cheers, VFR
