Thanks

I putting 44 grains of IMR 4895 in a Model 70 Featherweight with a 140 grain ballistic tip, which is giving 2800 fps out of a 22 inch barrel...

I am using Win and Rem 7 x 57 brass and regular large rifle priemrs...
t
that is plenty good for anything I need it to do..

or a 160 grainer at 2750...

or a 175 grainer at 2650 fps..

and welcome to the forums Dick!

In my Ruger No.1A w/22" tube, I get 2990 FPS with 53 grains of WW760 powder and Fed 210 primers. Nosler 140-grain Partition. Remington brass. No excessive pressure signs, but a long throat......

No pressure signs, easy extraction. I did take the Varget load to 45gr, again, no pressure signs.

The most accurate loads with several 7x57's and 140 grain Nosler Partitions is 47.0, or 48.0 grains of H-414. 48.0 is too hot in two of the rifles, but 47.0 is not. So, work up in your rifle.

the hornady 139 and 51 grs of rl-19 in roberts +p brass does 2750 you can work up from there.
the above load has perforated two mule deer bucks from end to end while they were standing one behind the other.
the shot was just over 125 yds and the bullet was not recovered.
went in the chest out in front of the rear leg in the second behind the ribs and out the collar bone.
it will also pass through both shoulders of a cow elk.
+p load not really but good nuff.

If your rifle has a long throat, Deguello's load will work. I shoot the exact same load, only a 140 TSX with a grain less or 53 grains with a 139 Hornady- exactly the same velocity. It shows I think 63000 psi on a my pressure trace. I have shot these all over the world in all kinds of weather on all kinds of game. That said, I had a 7x57 M70 years ago that would not accept anything even approaching this amount of powder. The loads for it went 2925 fps, went 2700 fps in my long throated Ruger. Obviously vast differences in chamber and throat, so use caution and sure as hell don't start out with over 50 grains of H414! I'd start at 47 grains and work my way up until I got a bit over 2900 fps and go kill something. Also there is a bit over one grain difference between Win. brass and Remington in the 7x57 so adjust accordingly.

+P = + pressure. A hot load in other words.

Dick, If the 140's dont work for your rifle you might want to give my load a try, I shoot a 175gn. speer grand slam over 49gns of imr-4350 w/a cci-250 mag primer C.O.L. is 3.100 vel from a 24" barrel is 2740 fps, great accuracy, case head expansion is .002 and no pressure signs in my rifle and tight primer pockets after 3 loadings so far. I use rem brass, my rifle will only shoot 175gn bullets with any accuracy. It is a german mauser w/ a douglas barrel. I would start 5gns under and work up carefully. This load has shot thru everything I have hit with it. good luck an good shootin' jerry

Thanks all for the information and loads. Haven't had a chance to shoot as of yet. Still can't get North Dakota into the spring weather mode. Cold and windy. Am loading a little of each but as I said in the beginning the rifle is built around a 140 gr. bullet. Am anxious to try the barnes 140. I drew a once in a lifetime elk tag(cow) for North Dakota and am tempted to use the 7 X 57. Will see how things shake out. Thanks again.
