Hey Russ,

Welcome to the forum.

Lots of useful data here. Don't let the ridiculous debates turn you away as we all tend to butt heads over some issues but, it's all in good fun.

I've loaded 180s and 150s in 300WSM and believe if you want a powder that will work well for each, you should probably get something in the 4831 range of burn. H4831 gave me good results with 150s when loading 70 grains (Win brass and WLR primers) You also don't need Mag primers in the short case.

If you don't really want to buy new powder, your R19 and N160 will work just fine for that cart and those bullet weights. The particular rifle I used didn;t care for R19 but, that's not to say yours will not, it may love it as all rifles are different.

W/ the 150s and R19 68-72.5max grains should give you some good velocity and may give you some good accuracy. W/ the 180s and R19 64-67 grains should give you descent velocity.

W/ N160 and the 180s you could try from 62-65.5 grns and w/ the 150s you could try from 64-67 grains maybe 68.

As with all data start off with midrange or starting loads so you can work up to max in your rifle safely.

If you decide to give Hodgdon Powders a try, check out there web site for some good data.

Good Luck w/ your new toy.

Reloader is correct in that each rifle has its own preference for bullets and powder. My most accurate load for my rifle is Win brass, WLRM primers, 165 gr Hornady InterBonds, and RL19.

You might check out this site for WSM info:

More info at that site than you'll ever be able to read!

I also use R-19 in 300 WSM, it is just about the perfect burn rate for 150, 165, and 180 grain bullets. Also works well fro the 190 match kings.

Huh, that shows how long it's been since I was there! I used to spend a good deal of time over there, just after I got my 300 WSM. I got tired of the nay sayers on other forums! The guy that runs net rifle was also tired of the general opinion that the 300 WSM was never going to ammount to a hill of beans, so he started his own website!

I have loaded 165 gr and 180 gr with my strong preference for 180 gr on the 300 WSM. I have also had good success with Win 760 powder (~65 gr). The bullets I have used included: Barnes triple shocks, Speer Grand Slams, and Hornady Interbonds. I stopped using the interbonds a couple of years ago based on several bullet failures experienced while shooting whitetails.

Good luck working up a load. I really like the 300 wsm. With it, I have taken a ton of big game (deer) and plains game as well (largest being Kudu).

Franchi, I've loaded for four different 300 WSM's. All showed a distinct preference for 180 grain bullets over 165's. I'll admit I've never shot 150's in any of my WSM's as, to me, heavier bullets are the reason 300 Mag's exsist.

I've used RL19, RL22, Ramshot Hunter, H4831 and H4350 with the last powder being my favorite.

The load I use is:

180 grain bullet / 64.0 H4350 / Fed 210 / WW Brass

In my current Kimber Montana the 180 Hornady, Nosler Partition and Accubond all shoot sub moa groups. This year I took an antelope at a lasered 547 yards, one shot, and a bull elk at 95 yards, one shot. Both were taken with the Nosler Partition at 2,960 fps.

In years past I've used 180 Failsafes to take Mule deer and elk as well.

The 180 Power Point is a great bullet and has proven very accurate in very 300 WSM I've used it in.

Good Shooting,

Brad

thanks for all the info guys. plenty to keep me busy over the holidays now
couldnt shoot at the range thursday as the fog was too thick here in the uk!
have looked thru this and the other forum, and h4350 keeps being mentioned again and again. i will go out and get some tmrw before the shops close for a few days
i think ill use the 150g's in my 308 and stick to the 180's in the wsm
many thanks to all who have replied, all info still gratefully received
