I bought a set of custom Redding dies from Ebay some years back and I'm not 100% sure what the letters on the box and dies stands for. The label on the box says....FL Die set 9.3x284 WM HVH Seating die is obvious, but the full length die says...9.3/284 LN HV FL Any ideas on the WM, HVH or the LN ?? Roger

I'd suggest emailing your question to Redding. Redding I'd be curious to know what you find out. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

probably codes for who cut the reamer, and maybe for how many times it's been used or re-sharpened [and by whom] stuff like that... that's what the codes on cast bullet molds mean.

Do you have a rifle in that chambering?

shootermetal...building one at the moment. Redding could not identify the dies from the description so I sent photo's of the box and contents....awaiting their next reply... Roger

You are not alone ![]() Pretty hopeless that Redding have no idea of their own coding, how would making a casting of the die interpret the codes!!!! Not my die box. ![]() ![]()

Maybe I should collect pictures of all these Redding boxes and bombard them with the pics one after another... ![]() Roger

I think the word custom explains it. The person who made the die is most likely long gone.

Even if they are custom dies, they should know their own nomenclature and symbols... Roger

Blame it on DEI | |||

They should also have the drawing they used to make the dies, I should think. Looks like hand loader magazine made a slew of X - 284 cartridges. Can only imagine WM means Winchester Magnum (I know, I know) and HVH the initials of the requester.

I like word puzzles but keep coming up empty on "WM-HVH" - even with the added hint that the letters appear on two different full length custom reloading die sets for two different rounds based on the .284 Win. case. They need to talk to a retiree from their tool and die shop! Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

Maybe the guy that ordered the dies requested it (something to do with his name or the project perhaps)? Just a guess obviously.

Maybe initials of two individuals involved in the project?

Edited my post above to include an image of the 8mm-284 FL die that goes with the die box. Shows the same code letters as the 9.3-284 FL die. Quite frustrating in not getting an interpretation of the codes.

LN maybe throated for long (round) nose bullet? Or long neck version of the cartridge for more bullet bearing surface? HV in HVH for high velocity?

Honestly, I think there are probably folks at Redding who know what they mean. I just think that the customer service people don't even know who to ask, and frankly, to them, this kind of question is something they don't have the time to make a dedicated effort into finding out.

I'm sure you are right there. Interesting when looking at the code letters on the 8mm-284 die, seem to be hand stamped rather than roll stamped, they don't line up neatly. I suppose as custom dies they are one off's in many cases so wouldn't set up for proper roll stamping.
