It's probably a 7.65 mm Argentine... very well liked action. Reloading components are available for it.

That rifle would take the 7.65x53mm Mauser cartridge, otherwise known as the 7.65 Belgian. Norma makes this ammunition in 180 grain bullet weight and it cooks out of a 29.1 inch m1909 Argentine barrel at 2598 (average of four cartridges) feet per second. Addendum Denton answered the question. I sent my post while there were no replies, his was obviously on the way. I don't like trying to look like a know-it-all...but it is hard...RR [This message has been edited by Roger Rothschild (edited 01-16-2002).]

I've got a 91 Argy Mauser in 7.65 Belgian. Great little woods gun. Mild on the shoulder too. ------------------

I have a "love afair" with the 7.65 to the point I even took it to Afica one time. Used in on Kudu, Impala etc, and it did just fine. Hornady 174 gr RN are the best, and the .311 180 Sierra's are next. The .311 dia Speers are TOO soft.

I, too, have had a "love affair" with this cartridge for many years, as my very first "surplus" rifle was a '91 Argy, acquired back in the '60's. In my mind, this is a very underated round-perhaps because of the bullet size. My current "favorite" is an Argy Carbine. I cleaned it up, glass bedded it, and it'll shoot MOA if I do my part...

I have a 1909 with a 29" barrel, I bought it from Century about 9 years ago, paid $89. I cleaned it up and the barrel looked almost new, I headed to the range with some Milsurp ammo. When I got there ther was one other guy there, he had a Ruger Stainless steel in 7mm rem mag, Leupold scope, shooting Federal premium. When he saw me with the Mauser, he asked me to move further away from him, he didn't want to be close to me when it blew up! I put up a target, and fired 5 quick rounds, I didn't have a spotting scope with me, so after he finished shooting, we went down range, my target had 4 rounds touching, with the 5th about an inch out, he had a 3 shot group in about 3". He was pissed, packed up his rifle and left.

I also have a love affair with this cartridge. I have an unaltered Model 1891 that my grandfather owned. The barrel could be in a little bit better shape, but it still shoots plenty good. I recently bought some Hornady bullets for it and will start reloading for it soon.

I use a forming die, and use 30-06 cases

The 7.65 Argentine is a very good catridge that suffers from a lack of commonly available components, especially brass. What I did when I shot one years ago was purchase a form die from RCBS that allowed me to run a 30-06 case innto it and then simply trim to length.

I'm just reading your question and I see that you are talking about 7,62 argentine. The caliber is 7,65 argentine , if it is 7,62 is a 308 winchester. Here in Argentina we have both of it. Good shooting guillermo
