I've nicked it a few times, and shot the sky screens off, but replaced them with home made versions. Still works. Now, I set a body armor plate in front, at an angle, so the bullets skip over it if I happen shoot too low. Had it happen once, and it left a mark and a crack on the plate where the bullet hit. BTW, our gun range has a massive hillside as a back drop, so the bullets hit that when they bounce off the plate. ~~~Suluuq

That sounds like a good approach Rusty, heck you could even angle the armor to deflect the projectile down using an offset mount. How do YOU get your readings, hmmmm? Or do you have to get up each time?

Sonofagun, The answer to your question is quite easy. Simply mount a small mirror on the back of your bullet deflector facing the readout, angled slightly downwards. Then mount another small mirror below the deflector facing you that is angled slightly upward so it allows you to see the first mirror. The double mirrors cancel out the mirror image effect and show you the readout "as is". The chrony is safe behind the deflector and the worst you can do theoretically is shatter one of your mirrors. Now, what do I win for guessing the answer to the riddle? Chuck Graber

Well, this ought to be interesting. A buddy/fellow shooter/life-long friend and I decided to "go in" on one together. We made a rule - whoever drills it, pays to fix it. So there's no stories to tell right now, but stay tuned. One of us, someday will nail this thing dead-on. I hope not, but from all the posts I've just read, is seems pre-determined. Hey ! I just had a thought - there's IHMSA, NRA, IPSC, SASS, LRHA, etc. competitions. Why not a Chrony shooting contest? Saeed - whaddya think? Wanna sponsor this baby???? Only time will tell,

Did it yesterday. Shot one of the arms off of my front skyscreen. Didn't realize it at first. I shot, returned the rifle to battery to spot the shot, noticed it had keyholed almost a foot from my aiming point I then begin the think: I must have hit something. What could I have poss---S&@t. Luckily, I have spare skyscreen parts so it's already fixed. Michael

I haven't drilled mine yet, but my 300 Wby has a bad tendacy to blast away the screens. I know for a fact that a Chrono will keep measuring even though the screens are lying all over the place. I use masking tape on the rod-to-rod joints and at the rod-screen junction. This configuration works very well.

I have had the same problem with my Mosin 91/30, had to use the same remedy too. I only shoot through my Chrony from a solid rest, and try to position the gun so it shoots even with the Brass part of the guide rods. I won't allow any off hand shooting through it. T/C Contender Shooter

Not exactly. I have nicked the strengthener rib on the Oehler 35 plastic skyscreen diffuser a couple times while shooting 44 mag freehand in a stiff wind. I don't know if I moved outside of the magic triangle, or if the wind swayed the skyscreens into the bullet. In any event, no harm, no foul.

A few years back I was out at the local range and found a Crony that had been shot, looked really dead. I had mine with me so I stuck in a battery, low and behold the "dead" one was still alive! I guess the shooter assumed it was totaled and just left it, they did take the screens etc though. I was there for several hours and no one showed up to claim it. Took it home, bought new screens and it's my 100 yd velocity crono now. Hey, if I wack it I'm not out anything. In quite a few secessions I've not wacked either one. I'm carefull but probably a bit lucky on the 100 yd one which works fine dispite the cracked display and bullet hole(s).

I shoot the chronograph every 2.5 years. I shoot the V sticks twice a year. The key for me was learning that a good chrono set up in a controlled range is not possible. I just shoot right for the chrono and miss the target. I write down the veloicty. Now I start shooting the target.

yes, i've done it... skipped a 44 mag off the very top of the sensors... bent them out.. worked great to a guy wanted to try mine, I offered to sell it cheap.. he bought it and SHOT IT the next shot. jeffe opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? never drilled mine but came VERY CLOSE one day when I changed sights on a gun and did not chek where they pointed before I shot . . . TWO holes in the cardboard (yes this is a while back) before I extracted my head so I could see the holes and sight the gun in a little. I have white tape on the uprights of my PACT so I know the scope elevation line or line of sight with open sights MUST be between them to fire. It has worksed so far! I hit one of the metal rods and broke one of the sensors and broke it. Got a new one from chrony put it in and the first time out I shot the wire in two where it goes over the center part where it folds up. I was muzzle blasting the crap out of mine too so I called chrony and they told me it was too far from the muzzle, giving the blast enough time/distance to expand. I was probably 15 feet away, I moved it closer and haven't had any more trouble with muzzle blast.

Yup. Twice in fact. You would think that once would teach a guy. The first was my mistake when testing loads for my 280. I was shooting at the bottom target of a larger target and didn't pay attention to the height of the chrony. On the second I was sighting in a friends Tikka 243 with what turned out to be a badly out of alignment scope. Skimmed the top of the sensors. It still worked, but looked pretty rough so I sent it back to Shooting Chrony for repair. Cheaper than a new one and very fast service.

I have a spare Chrony to scavenge for parts. I've used some of the rods to replace those that have taken off for the wild blue yonder. I got that spare by putting a Berger .308 210 grain VLD at about 2800 FPS straight through the center of it. I thought I'd get the best precision by skimming the bullets close over the screens and set up to do that. But I forgot how much lower the bore line is than the sight line. When I fired the Chrony slowly toppled backward as I thought, "I sure hope the muzzle blast pushed it over!" That VLD drilled a mighty neat hole! "A cheerful heart is good medicine."

Funny you should ask...done it twice. Once after having the chrony for years...I usually set it up myself but one day I took my brother-n-law to the range and thought it would be faster to look through the scope and have him adjust the height of the sensors, of course forgetting about the scope height above the bore. First shot drilled a perfect 7mm hole through all 3 sensors. Second time was when I decided to chronograph some rifled slugs...forgot about that nasty plastic sabot that eats skyscreens...it also chipped one of the sensors but didn't destroy it. So now I have an ugly chrony, but it still works great. "The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter" - Winston Churchill

I sent my old chrony to the happy hunting grounds a few years ago. It was the old red shooting chrony that unfolded. Anyway, I had just gotten my Barrett 82A-1, and was anxious to try out some handloads at the range. I set up the chrony at 25 feet and sandbagged the legs of the tripod, which was a Walmart special. Since I had a scope mounted on the rifle, I guesstimated the correct height for the chrony, set my targets at 200 yards and shot one 3 shot group in the upper target. The noise had drawn a person or two to watch and ask a few question. The scope wasn't off too much, as I remember two inches high and one inch right. I adjusted the scope for both errors, and proceeded to try for a bullseye in the bottom target. I squeezed off the first shot, and the guy that was watching me yelled "you got it!" He was right. I sent a Hornady A-max thru the dead center of my chrony screen. Needless to say penetration was 100%. I salvaged the sky screens and battery cover from the chrony. The Walmart tripod top was broken off, and the chrony had a very large hole thru it that made inspection the interior parts a snap. I have never repeated this with my Oehler 35p. Not yet, anyway... There's a nifty nick right over the top of the sensors of my Chrony. However, the classic shot for me was a time when I was out at the range with a bunch of friends, and set up to clock some rounds from my Mauser actioned 6mm-.284. Well I got all niceley set up, Chrony on my nice camera tripod, rifle ready, friends watching etc. This particular rifle has a bit of a hair trigger, and I made a slight oops: I put my attention elsewhere without removing my finger from inside the trigger guard. Yep, you know the rest. When the rifle fired, the muzzle had dipped, and I learned that the tripod head was no match for the 70gr Nosler BT traveling at about 3400fps. The head was shot clean from under the chrony, the tripod landed 5 ft forward, and the Chrony wound up sitting on the ground pretty much where it had started. Based on the small pieces of tripod head, the bullet expanded adequetly and transferred most of it's energy. We won't discuss my friends reactions, but surprisingly enough, the Chrony worked after, and still does to this day. Eric
