F1 Chrony (bizarre error reading question).

Dear all

Ive had a F1 Chrony for years. I think it is about 14 years old or more.

Anyway I've never had an issue with it until a few weeks ago.

When I put a shot through it I get an error reading which reads:

Err1

and then

-00-

these two readings flash on and off alternately.

I have pressed everything on it to try and clear these error messages but can't unless I disconnect it from the battery. But after doing so and putting another shot through it, I get the same error message again.

Highly frustrating. Has anyone experienced this as well? The other thing I haven't done yet is to look on the internet to see if the manufacturer has an office number I could call with view to speaking to someone possibly.

Anyway I hope to get some advice from here.

Thanks

Jon

Err1 typically means the shot was only read by one sky screen. If you are certain everything was lining up properly, you may have a bad screen. I would suggest giving Chrony a call.

D) Err 1 shows on screen; the first sensor did not detect the passage of the bullet. This means either that the shot was not fired directly over the centre of the first sensor, or, that there are poor light conditions. Be sure that the Chrony is aligned with the line of fire.

Thanks boys and thanks for explaining what Err1 means.

Chrony is lined up fine and no problem with light conditions.

I will have a look in more detail at the sensors etc but as you recommended I contacted Chrony (thanks for the link) and they have said it could also be debris obstructing the connectors on the telephone cable.

I will do both and hopefully that will solve it.

Thanks for the info.

I have had my F-1 for a few years now and have thought about putting a shot through it (literally)! I won't even take it to the range any longer because it is so unreliable.

Consistant lighting on the lenses or photo eyes is very important. Just this past week I had mine inside the shop doors (shooting out) and shade from the wall was casting over one lens. I got some screwy readings with same powder charges.

My Gamma chroney has a remote display. One at the range I was constantly getting the error 1 message and it totally foxed me. No problems with the reset though. Then I realised that I had it set up back to front & was shooting over the back sensor first!

I hope my response does not seem harsh, but your post is not helpful.

Please describe the nature of your F=1's failings and give details (firearm, load, distance from the muzzle, did you use skyscreens or not? what was the weather/lighting conditions? indoors or out?

These all affect chronographs of all makes.

Until someone markets a chronograph that uses radar or electromagnetic detection, we are dependent on light and shadow (unless we go back to the old "wires embedded in the paper screen" technology of the '60s.

If you want to help your fellow shooters, that's one thing. If you just want to vent, that's another. I am OK with either, but this forum is expecting more from you, I think.

Lost Sheep

I have a Chrony and find it adequate. I prefer the ones with remote readout and if yours is one, I will give you $20 bucks for it and pay shipping. It is always nice to have a spare.

shockerSeems I'm not alone and my findings can be found on a number of older threads. I tried three of their models before I got the Oehler. BOOMroger beer
