I plan to rechamber an Winchester model 1886 from caliber 45-70 to 450 alaskan and I wonder if it´s anyone here who have load data for that caliber. What is the max velocity out of that cartridge with 350 grain and 400 grains bullets? What is the pressure limits for model 1886? This rifle is for smokeless powder and bought 2004. Kalle

Kalle, I do have loading data scanned for this caliber. I do believe it was developed for the Win M71 and not the M1886. Send me a PM with your e-mail. I will be leaving for a Spring Break vacation tomorrow. MM

I don't see what you would gain by this conversion. What velocities are you expecting? My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

ifin it will fit... the 450 alaskan will run a 405 at 2250, using benchmark. a 45/70 will run out at about 1850. (or a 394gr barnes solid.. a 400 with 6gr turned off to be flats) hell of a round, totally classic and interesting. didn't know the 1886 would hold the round, though jeffe opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? Grizzly Cartridge Company I shoot this in my Marlin GS day in and day out as well as Buffalo Bore Loaded Ammo And no it's not in any way shape OR form to HOT for the Marlin Lever Action rifle. Caliber: 45-70 +P Bullet Wt: 405 Grain WLNGC Velocity: 2050 fps Caliber: 45-70 +P Bullet Wt: 460 Grain WFNGC Velocity: 1800 fps And what's the safe PSI range for a New Mod 1886 Chambered fpr a 450 Alaskan It max's out around 49.000 PSI to 55.000 PSI but don't go there Unless you have a death wish. I have shot well over 3700 round of a mix or Buffalo Bore and Garrett and Grizzly in my Poor little Marlin GS And i have Zero head spacing trouble's. I have as of now checked the marlin GS 5 time's at a gunsmith's for head spacing worried that the heavy load's will hurt the rifle.. Thay don't

I used to load mine with a 400 grain bullet and 64 grains of IMR 4064. Never chronoed this load, but it was a handful! Also accurate. I don't know how close to max it was, (M71 WIN.), but I had to epoxy cement the Redfield receiver sight onto the thing to keep it from jumping off every five shots. Also had to epoxy the forend to the magazine tube to keep it on. I suppose an 1886 would hold it, but I'd prefer an M71! "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."

Kalle, I have a Browning 71 in .450 AK with a 22 inch tube. I use Kodiak 405 gr bullets with 67.5 gr of IMR-3031 for 2270 fps or North Fork 350 gr flat points with 69 gr of IMR-3031. Haven't chrono'd the NF bullets yet. I have shot some 400 gr GS FN's with 67 gr of IMR-3031 and they went 2305 fps. All of these loads show no signs of excess pressure in my gun. I have a Ruger #1 set up for the .450 AK and plan on wiring it to an oehler 43 when time allows. There are quite a few powders that I am planning on trying.

An '86 of recent manufacture will handle 42,000 psi, as well as the length of the 450 Alaskan. The 86 is a great action. The 71 may seem a little smoother, but that's only because the bolt lugs are slightly tapered on top in front, while the 86 lugs are cut straight. That's also why the 71 action may open slightly with over-pressure loads.

The same thing happen's on the Marlin G and GS WWwest gun company has a fix for that though for the marlin i mean it's a new lever and a bit of action work . Although it cost somthing like 600.00 to fix a 520.00 Rifle ..but the action does stay shut . the draw back to it is the lever's a little harder to work. You have to force it . nOt much but more then you would on a new marlin
