Can anyone shed some light on this for me? What causes the black podwer residue to form on the neck of fired cases? Bobby B.

OK,OK, let me rephrase the question. Why am I getting the black marks on the neck of my 6/284 cases and not on my 7RM cases? Bobby B.

Actually the powder gases are likely flowing back along the neck walls before the pressures are high enough to expand them and seal the chamber. It`s a common occurance. Sometimes slower powders are more apt to show this then faster ones, and starting loads are known for it. ------------------------------------ The trouble with the Internet is that it's replacing masturbation as a leisure activity. ~Patrick Murray "Why shouldn`t truth be stranger then fiction? So a cool barrel that has not expanded in the chamber area would cause this? ![]() ![]() Work hardened brass will soot up, even more so with slower powders and some powders just dont burn the cleanest in some cartridges. I found this to be the case in a couple of calibers once brass had a few reloads on it in factory cut chambers.
