I've been looking for a load to take with me to South Africa in my 300 Win Mag using the Barnes 180 gr TSX.

I was at my gunsmith's place the other day looking for a few answers. I was getting 3 shot groups in the 1-1.5" range, which I was acceptable with, however, the groups were not consistent from one range trip to another. Many of the groups were in a vertical line, perhaps 2 touching, or near touching, with the 3rd off from 1" to 1.75". So, I was asking some questions about the gun, etc. He suggested I needed to use a faster burning powder versus the IMR7828ssc, RL22, Magnum and MagPro, I'd tried thus far. His suggestion was when getting vertical stringing, the fix is to try a faster burning powder.

He suggested a load that he uses with 180 gr bullets in all of the 300 Win Mag rifles he builds. He mainly shoots Hornady, Sierra and Speer bullets, but said he didn't see why the Barnes wouldn't do the same. His comment was, "If the rifle didn't shoot this load, then we need to work on it." He also stated the load should be shooting around 3100 fps.

I was a bit skeptical because the load he suggested is over current published recommendations. However, I worked up to the suggested load and here are the results. There were absolutely no over pressure signs, heavy bolt lift, etc.

Three shot group with Barnes 180 gr TSX average speed was 3096 fps with 22 fps deviation.

I do believe you might have just hit upon a load to take. Nice shooting.

Nope, Snell had just left before I got to this one.

I'm gonna shoot it again either Monday or Tuesday. Keeping my fingers crossed!!

Powder was IMR 4350, but Kevin said either IMR or H4350 would do the same, just use what I have on hand.

Powder charge was 72 grains, which is well over published max. I started at 5% below 69 grains (book max) and worked up in 0.5 grain increments, I would suggest doing nothing short of what I did in your rifle.

Are you using some software to calculate the group size?

Saeed,

The software is called OnTarget. Here is a link to the website where you can download. Link

The software was free at one time, but now they charge $12 for a registration fee.

Great shooting rifle and load. I wouldn't change a thing on it.
Always liked Rugers and never found one that could not shoot well with a little tinkering.

I know from long experience that EACH rifle has it's preferences...I have a 338-06 that only likes 225 gr Hornady SP's...puts 5 into one small hole and has been doing that for 40 odd years...It won't do better than 1 1/2 - to 2" with any other 338 gr bullet and I've tried ALL the brands and weight.

My 300 WM shoots just about any weight/brand of 30 cal bullet into .75" or better but it depends on the velocity...50-100 fs one way or another will open/close the group.

My 7mm RM likes the discontinued Nosler 140 gr SB AND the Nosler 150 gr, the 100 gr Sierra HP and Horn 120 V-Max at velos well above reloading manuals levels, but NOT the Horn 100 gr HP at ANY VELO...go figure.

The same goes for every rifle I've had/have over the years.

You just have to work to find the best load and what works best in one rifle may or may not work best in your rifle.

It can be maddening at times when Murphy is messing with you.
