You amaze me with your naievete.... Here is a retired LEO, specifically stating that choice of ammunition WILL BE A factor, and you continue to stick your head in the sand.

I sincerely hope no "meth head" as you call it, decides to see what is inside your domicile. Your unwillingness to go buy a box or two of factory stuff for the sake of your bride and daughters smacks of bullheadedness, and a bit of blinder-led ignorance, in my opinion...
I would invite you to do do a google search for the guy in Louisiana that shot the costumed Asian who didn't speak English... He shot the guy with a 44 Redhawk, the only firerarm the man had. The prosecutor had a field day. The man was found innocent, eventually, but I ask you this: is that something you want your wife and daughters to endure? I have three of my own, and my answer is given without a moment's hesitation. If you have to think about what it is, you haven't read very closely...

Guys, I can add a little fire to this tale. Back in the ancient 1960s there was a popular "defense load" for the .38 Special where you used a 148 grain inverted hollow based wadcutter with a gas check. I forget the charge of Unique, but I did see the results of the round being fired at feral dogs, gruesome to say the least. We loaded quite a lot of this ammo for our friends in certain Navy "spook" squadrons who flew "where no one has gone before" and were not worried about prosecution, just their lives. However, I wouldn't think of loading my revolver with inverted wadcutters today because of the liberal lawyers and rampant anti-gunner sympathies. Alas, the good old days are gone, then, we did not have +P and +P+ ammo back then either!

There is an article in the "2002 Hodgdon Annual Manual":
"Handloading and self Defense" by Dick Metcalf

Dick makes the point that published loads are optimized for longer barreled guns than carry guns.
That often means looking for a hollow point with a faster upset velocity, like Win Silver tip or Rem Golden Saber.

[quote]Again, this may look like a self defense shooting, but being a member of the "factory ammo only" cult is like being a member of the Man Boy Love Association and possessing child pornography[/quote

i dont need a search engine thanks, the young man that was shot was shot outside the house 2 feet from the property line. illuminated by floodlights and NOT holding any weapon.
I dont need a "im a retired cop" to tell me what a Ballistics expert has already said. a ballistics expert who has sat on the bench of thousands of shooting cases. you sir should stick to your ideas and let me stick to mine.
I am not "niave" sir. i have already seen my share of little orange sparks.

I spend most of my time lurking and not shooting off my mouth.

Here's my two bits, when I go out on the "street" in code yellow mode, I follow Massad's advise and carry factory loads only. I figure he has been court many more times than I ever will, so why fool around.

When I am at the range, I use "practice loads" matching factory specs for training purposes.

The point being, when I am out on the street, I go with over the counter ammo for the specific reasons already stated. I live in a democrat district, I have a liberal Democratic Prosecuting Atty, and that means the jurys in my district will have liberal dem's in them too. Going out "on the street" with hand loads in a district such as mine is fundementally stupid.
