Rabies is very common. When we lived in NW Fl the foxes would wander up on playgrounds and into backyards and there were always 2-3 children being bitten each year. Now we are in NE Ala and this area plus SE Tenn and NW Ga is involved in a federally funded rabies eradication program with raccoons being targeted. I personally have eradicated 8 and done so quietly in the night as they raid/destroy our bird feeders for they do love sunflower seed.
I am always amazed how some parents will let their little children try and pet the cute foxes/coons that run up to them from the bushes.You would think any animal acting out of character would be recognized as a threat.
