I am interested to see what most people use to get small game. I am talking about the furry kind and not the feathered variety.

I am mainly interested in weather you use a rimfire rifle or scatter gun, or I guess some may use centerfire rifles as well.

I prefer a .22 Lr, mainly a Savage Model 72, which was my first rifle. I got it at the age of 8 and it has killed a pile of critters over the years.

Depends on area really.
My favorite is my Tikka T3 lite .223 with suppresor, shoots everything from rabbits to goats, or my Ruger 10/22, also suppresed.
I say depending on area because I do a bit of spotlighting with both rifles but in a life style block situation the 223 is a bit loud so the .22 is used more.
Possums over here in NZ are a problem but their fur is kinda valuable $75 a kilo takes about 16 to get a kilo, the most effective way to get these tough little shits outa trees is with a shot gun, less fur damage too.
BUT they kinda dont hang on to much when they get a 223 50 gr BT or HP in the face tho clap

Depends where I am hunting. In the PDR of MA, a rifle is a no-no for squirrel, so I use a scattergun.

In NH/VT/ME, my CZ 452 will do small game duty for squirrel and some others. Bunnies and hares over dogs, shotty gets the nod.

Last night I shot 2 feral cats within 5 minutes while waiting for those wicked wild boars who assault that farmer's corn field.

I used a Blaser K95 in 8x75 mm RS equipped with a Zeiss 8x56 mm scope but felt slighly overgunned (for the cats, that is).

Duk, you're right, that was a little overkill but dead is dead Big Grin I myself like to use a 22 mag on feral cats and a 22-250 on feral dogs. I really don't care to save the hides of the dogs, but the cats made into pouches for the black powder hunters are a piece of art Wink

I use a Ruger 10-22, or a 22 pistol. The rifle works great on squirrels and bunnies, but the pistol is for the deer blind. Usually see a lot of snowshoe hares where I hunt, and the pistol makes short work of them. Also good for feral cats. Wink

A lot of truth in this statement.

I bought a used insert barrel in .22 Hornet for my o&u combination rifle. Shoots quite well but every time I carry it no vermin appear...

I've recently started experimenting with reduced loads in my 221 Fireball. The data is posted on the "reloading pages". Anyway, 3.5gr of Unique combined with a 40gr V-Max has landed 3/8" groups at 50yards, and is running around 1450fps +/-. I've still got a bit of work to do to get everything ironed out and sighted in, but all in all, this should make one hell of a squirrel rifle for this years season clap

Marlin 22 magnum after the leaves fall, rem 870 20 guage early on, also good for the occasional grouse. I do get tired of picking shot from my squirrels though.

Swamp_Fox--

Just think, the possibilities are endless. When I was young and crazy in VN, we used to pull the bullets from M-16 rounds and then stick the case mouth in a bar of soap. Then we'd sit in a dimly lit room waiting for cockroaches, mice, etc. Lots of fun.

For squirrels, I generally use either a CZ 452 FS .22 mag with a Burris 6x Compact and a Browning BAR-22 that currently wears a Beeman 2.5x .22 LR. For ammo in the magnum I use either a FMJ or the Winchester .22 WRF with the 45 gr flatpoint. I thought the Winchester Dyna-point with the lead bullet at lower velocity would be the ticket but even they are pretty destructive. I shoot whatever is handy in the BAR-22. I want to have a custom Contender Carbine barrel made up in .22 Rem Jet for long range squirrels. If I can find a suitable bullet, it should have some interesting possibilities. I've also been meaning to get some cast bullets to try in a .25/20 on squirrels but just haven't had time.
I have been known to hunt squirrels with a shotgun and my favorites are a Stoeger Uplander double in 28 ga and my grandpop's old Winchester 24 16 ga.

You guys must have a good mast crop up there. That is one big squirrel.

I've actually ate quite a few groundhog and they weren't too bad until I actually learned to kill deer.

i like to use my winchester 20 ga pump with a trukey choke for squirls cuz i can shoot on the run, my remington 700 .223 is great for small birds to deer up to 200 yds, but my favorite and most accurate gun is my $150 marlin 22 mag bolt gun with a 7 round clip - it's light, accurate, cheap, and will kill any small game

Ruger 20 ga for dove/quail and either a Ruger 77-22 or Rem 512 for everything else up to feral hogs.

I've shot a ton of starlings, house sparrows, and years ago, crows. As a youngster, my best friend and I would go to the city cemetery with our BB guns after school and terrorize the squirrels and songbirds. Sometimes we would go to his grandpa's farm for the weekend and raise hell with the starlings, sparrows, and pigeons in the barn and cotton gin.

The primary squirrel/rabbit gun is a Ruger 10/22 stainless/laminate stock with a Tasco 4X. I don't use a shotgun because of meat damage, plus the ammo costs too much for magnum #4 rounds.

I often carry my BFR pistol in 460 S&W for small game, stoked with 250-gr FP lead bullets at around 900 fps. It is actually more accurate than my 10/22. Once you shoot squirrels with your hunting handgun, shooting deer is like shooting at elephants. I mean, headshots on deer are EASIER than shooting a scampering grey at 30 yards. Best practice ever!

We can't use silencers here, unfortunately, otherwise a lot of possum would end up in the pot. However, in the next few months I'm going to be building up a Martini action into a .22 WMR with a 6X scope. That ought to pot a few bunnies out to a 150 yards if I can hold 'er steady.

A little Marlin 22WMR with a 2-7 VX1 that I had to bring home from Nebraska about 15 yrs ago.
It will put Winchester Super X HP's within 3/4 of point of aim out to about 150.

I grab this one for every trip from grouse to rabbit to tree rats.
