I also take quite a bit of small game for the pot with my drillings, using the shotgun barrel.

I even bought a Blaser 9,3x74R x20ga. Double rifle drilling to use in Idaho for black bear, deer, and elk, so I am able to take grouse when ever I see them.

I enjoy hunting squirrels. I enjoy it a lot. My present favorite is an ancient Mossberg 46B, re-lined to .177 and chambered in 17 Mach II. This is an awesome squirrel rifle. Accurate, devestatingly deadly but not overly destrutive.

The old mossback was a rusty mess when I picked it up for fifty bucks. Slimmed the stock, bored the shot/rusted out barrel and re-lined/re-chambered, cleaned up, polished and re-blued the metal, converted the tube mag (wouldn't feed 17's) to box mag and she's never let me down. I'd put it up against any new rifle out to 75 yds.

One of the ideas I have had is to find a way to shoot lightweight bullets from my 303 Brit. Trouble is, it is designed for long, heavy bullets. If I could find a way to make long light bullets ...... Roll Eyes
That's just to be able to use the rifle from time to time. I have a 25 now.

My favorite for rabbits and squirrels is an old Marlin 39a with open sites. Its one of the most accurate 22s i've ever shot. Open sites lets me get rabbits on the run.

For vermin I use 1 of 4 guns. When I want to feel young again, I take out my old Cooey 22lr single shot silver bolt, it's the rifle I learned to shoot with, you only usually get one shot so you gotta make it count. On days when I want to be more technologically advanced I take out my Ruger 10/22 and blast away at anything that moves...the squirrels don't know what hits 'em. Some days I take out my old Cooey/Winchester 12 guage or the same brand 16 guage for rabbits and squirrels.

I went cottontail hunting the other day using a CZ 452 in .17Mach2. Got three, the exceptional accuracy of that rifle and round combo allowed for easily consistent head shots out to about the longest which was near 80 yards. Sure wouldn't want to make contact with any of the eating part.
I also don't shoot runnin bunnies, to much room for error for old farts like me. I do like eatin em.

I use a ruger m77 in 17hmr witj leupold 3-9 vx2 leupold dot.I had this setup since the 17 came out. It is deadly, I have taken ground squirrels, badgers, rockchucks, shots were close to 250 yds. Very accurate 5 shots at 100yds a dime will cover the holes. It's my favorite.

Very nice! Did you do most/all that work? Great work either way! Is that something you do your self?
Love the case tumbler too! I was thinking of something like that my self. Just didn't think too hard on it, maybe it would be a project in my machining course.

I have taken possum with a machete, a baseball bat & a 2x4 didn't need a gun. They would drive my hunting dog crazy.

As I hunted in a lot of areas where it wasn't safe to shoot a rifle into the air when squirrel and coon hunting, I used a variety of shotguns. Favored the 12 ga. for it's increased range. I do prefer to use an accurate .22 when hunting the big woods though, and center-fire varmint rifles for game that i don't intend to eat. My favorite .22 is a Ruger 1022 with a fluted Clark barrel and volquartsen trigger, it's a hummer.

Here's my list:

10/22 Ruger with 38gr jacketed hollow pts for Jack Rabbits and smaller. Hot Lips 25 rd magazines are awesome.

12 ga. shotgun with #4 Buck for Coyotes
12 ga. shotgun with bird shot for most everything smaller than a Coyote

17 HMR for ??? I have one, yet no personal experience with what it will do to a sage rat and smaller critter (good reports though).

Good luck,
M
