20 yds. or less ...very rare, unless trapped or snared. A 22lr in a hunting / calling situation in my opinion is just inadequate. Coy's are tough critters , and it takes a well placed shot with either an explosive(rapid expansion)bullet or one with more knockdown than a plain 22 to kill them cleanly.
I use a 12ga. up close say 40yds or less.Past that out to 200yds I favor my 6mm rem.
just my 2 cents.

A friend of mine was calling coyotes in montana & got one but the other critter that came in was a bit of a surprise, a good size irritated black bear .In his location in NW MT there are lots of species of big game just up the road :griz, black bear, elk, moose, whitetails & muleys, wolves, mtn lions, lynx, coyotes, wolverines, badgers, skunks, grouse, turkeys, rocky mtn big horn sheep & goats, etc.

I have killed a couple of stupid coyotes that stopped to look back after crossing the road in front of me with Ruger 22 pistol/Red Dot Sight loaded with CCI Velocitors. Range was under 50 yds, multiple hits. In my LE job I had to shoot a lot of feral dogs on a military air base and as a civilian LEO out in the country. Dogs/coyotes are reaaly hard to kill cleanly at extended ranges if you don't use enough gun. I always had a .223 assualt rifle in the seat beside me and it worked great on everything.

The minimum I would use is probably a 22 mag if I was specifically hunting them, and I agree on them being tougher to kill than most people would think. I would use a centerfire if the shots were any further than 75 yards or so.

Came across one at 70 yards last year with only my 17 hmr and even though I felt a little undergunned I shot him anyway since it was so close to home and local pets had been disappering due to all the coyotes, he ran 100 yards before he went down and when I got to him he was dead. The bullet passed completly through and I hit him right behind the shoulder. He was just over 60lbs and the largest coyote I have ever shot, If the shot placement was off much at all I probably would not have found him.

My father has taken 2 coyote with a 17HMR.
One at 100 yds broad side through ribs/lungs pass through. It trotted 8o yds and fell dead.

2nd was taken full on chest shot at about 60 yds. Went down and didn't run.

I've heard of but never witnessed a Coyote kill with a .22. I'd only feel comfortable with a close in head shot.

I've killed a few with a 22lr. I squealed them in, and shot them with a mod 41. I spent a few years obsessed with that 22.

I've read somewhere (??), that the " Aguilas .22 cal Subsonics ", were used by many " Animal Control Dept's " in rural areas ( Dedicated Rifles, using proper Twist 1 in 9 and 1 in 7 twist barrels ). The " Aguilas " would penatrated better, due to their weight (60 grns), within reasonable distances (under fifty yards ??)..

I've done a bit of testing in the past, with some of my " Rifles ".. @ Fifty Yards!

Resized to feed reliably from a Magazine.

I tried " Re-sizing " a few to see if they would stabalize in several( 5-6) of my ".22 cal Rifles ", with limited success .. !

Too much Resizing , effected " Overall Diameter of the lead bullet ", which led to feeding problems, in particular, in a very tight " Match Chambers ".. (ODCMP: 40X / Win 52D)

p.s.: Done with a " Neal Waltz .22 cal Resizing Die;

That idea might work better in a .22 WMR.

I grew up in wide open farm and pasture country. When I was a teenager I Shot one coyote with a 22 RF at about 75 yards and saw it run over hill. Never could find it. I got a 222 Rem as soon as I could afford it. I dont see any point in being under guned for the size of the animal hunted. Its fun to have a number of firearns so that why some fity years later than my first shot at a coyote there is a 22-250, 220 Swift, and 243 Win rifles in my gun case to hunt them.

A shotgun loaded with either #2-BB lead or 4buck is more effective on coyotes out to @ 40 yards. With that said the 22LR WILL kill any coyote around. Would it be my first choice if going out coyote hunting? No it would not, but it will kill them if you do your part.

The 22lr will kill any coyote GRAVEYARD dead right there where it stands with a BRAIN shot as far as you can hit one. Note I didnt say a "head" shot. You must hit the brain itself to disrupt the central nervous system. The 22lr does not have the energy to turn a marginal shot into a quick kill like more standard varmint guns.

A shot to the heart/lung area will kill them to as far as you can hit them. Yes, they will probably run 30-100 yards just like a deer hit in the same area will when shot with any large caliber rifle.

The only way to drop ANY animal reliably with any rifle is to distrupt/destroy the central nervous system(brain/spine).

There have been a LOT of coyotes killed in a trap with both 22 shorts and 22lr.

It is all about shot placement!

Thanks

I used to call coyotes in thick canebreak woods in Alabama. ALL shots were under 30 yards. A Rem Nylon 66 22 loaded with HPs was my weapon of choice.

Shooting usually started at 10-15 yards with the yote coming to you, ended several shots later as the coyote tried to exit....

Never lost one...and killed a bunch.

I consider the .22LR too small for coyotes. Even on raccoons the .22LR normally takes numerous shots in order to be sccessful.

Racoons have a large layer of fat that Coyotes don't normally have. 22 LR pistol was my shoice to shoot them off of a snowmobile in the 70's.

Oh, c'mon guys!

If you just "pick your shots" and "put the bullet in the right spot" you can kill anything with a .22!

You CAN kill coyotes with a 22lr,

You CAN work on guns with a cresent wrench and walmart screwdrivers.

CAN doesnt make either one a good idea.

Ct. doesn't allow anything larger than 22rimfire on state lands. Sometimes you have to use what the law allows. Velocitors with a head shot, nothing past 60 yards.
