I know this has been covered tangentially in the past, but if I may impose on some of you learned taxidermists to give us some pointers? Normally I lightly vacuum my trophies with low power suction and or blow the dust off them. But I remember someone suggesting to use Windex to rub the hair down? I visited a trophy cleaning website where they also treat them with a lanolin based solution? Thank you. jorge

Jorge,

I am not a taxidermist, I just play one! Big Grin (Based on dumb old TV commercials). Seriously, I also vacuum my stuff. Heck I even vacuum my live animals, the dog, cats and when I had horses. They all love it.

I spray the trophies once a year with Permanone spray once a year as well for critter control.

jorge -- Interesting. We're moving to Tampa this summer and I was going to ask you about your trophy care. I'm a bit concerned about the humidity down there.

Jorge, there was a thread about this on the taxidermy forum not long ago.

Here is a recap.

For general cleaning/dusting, I have used Windex with no problems. Others said the ammonia was not good for the hair and would make it brittle. I do not use much, just spay a little on a rag and wipe the mount in the direction of the hair. I suppose a spray bottle of water would work just as well. A Swifter duster was also recommended. Taxidermy Magic spray adds a shine to the hair (available from taxidermy suppliers).

For bug proofing I would recommend using Protex Mount Care spray at least once a year. You can spray this on a rag and wipe the mount.

Anything that needs a more involved cleaning/refinishing should go to a taxidermist.

Jorge,

I'm not sure Windex is good for the mounts, but it sure will clean them up.

I had heard about using it a while back, so I tested it on one of my pronghorn mounts that's over 40 years old. The white had turned a putrid yellowish tan, likely the result of the nicotine it has been subjected to for all those years.

The spot I lightly sprayed the Windex on turned a pure white again after a minimum of gentle rubbing with a paper towel. I then followed it up with a blow dry job with a hairdryer set on low-heat.

The whites on my three caribou mounts are also yellow now. Soooo...now all I have to do is clean all the other 'lopes and critters the same way. When I do the entire pronghorn head, I'll post the before and after pix here. -TONY

Here is a tip for dusting off birds.
shoot a cat and cut off tail. fit a long piece of steel-wire into the tail and let it dry out. There you go. And now you have the best little brush for your bird mounts ;-)

The best thing to do is just not touch them.Dry cleaning would be good if it is possible. If you get any liquid on these things they will stain forever. The best thing to do is keep them dry and dust free with dry compressed air.If they must be cleaned to remove cigarette tar or cooking grease then I recommend the spot clean carpet foam cleaners that sell in a spray can.

Lets see, never get any liquid on them or they will be stained forever. But if they do need to be cleaned, use foam because that is not wet. And never touch them except for if you take them to the dry cleaners.

Thanks. Now I know how to get the bacon grease off my zebra skin back splash. Big Grin

Damn, shootaway people say some bad things about you but you are good for a laugh every now and then. clap

Thanks, Grafton. I just ordered the stuff you recommended. Wow, there are a lot of products to choose from. Will the Protex also protect from bacteria?

jorge, To my knowledge the Protex is designed to repel moths, beetles, and other insects that could damage the mounts. I have no idea on its effect on bacteria.

You will notice that the Protex has a strong but not too terrible odor. Open windows and doors and let them air out. The smell will go away after a few days. I put it into a spray bottle and spay some on a rag, then wipe down the entire mount in the direction of the hair.

It is hard to really evaluate the effectiveness of this product. I use it on my personal trophies about once or twice a year and have never had bug problems. Who knows, I may have never had a problem without using it. Cheap insurance I guess.

The Taxidermist's Magic is already in a spray bottle but again, I would spray a rag and then wipe it onto the mounts. If you get the spray on your walls it could leave a stain. If you get the spray on your floor it will make it EXTREMELY slippery. I got some on my concrete shop floor one time and just about fell down everytime I walked over the spot. This product does not have bug repellent qualities that I am aware of. It is designed to shine the hair and help repel dust. Hope all that helps.

Taxidermy magic can also be found at your local feed store under "cowboy magic" for horses. Same stuff. You can also use Scotts Liquid gold on antlers (nothing on horns!)

FYI guys: Protex is the replacement for Edolan U. Ed-U was the best since Arsenic, but the EPA banned Ed-U as someone "might" be allergic to it. It was a permanant treatment for fish, fur or feathers. Once treated, the trophy was protected for life (no pun intended). Now that Protex is here (developed by the carpet industry for oriental rugs, etc.) it should be applied at least once per year and as mentioned, it has a strong smell that lasts for days. A good way would be to hang it in a temporary spot in the garage. Sheep and Antelope are especially vulnerable. Many types of insects will eat both horn and cape. Don't rely on just your Taxidermist for bug proofing. It is your responsibility to follow up. If your unsure, take your mount, or have your Taxidermist take a look at your trophy room once per year. Light vaacuming or air blowing your mount is fine if you use low air. Wiping down with a damp cloth is fine. Most everything else leaves a residue that over time builds up. Common Windex uses blue dye. So it might be good to follow behind the Windex cleaning with a damp rag rinsed in clean water. LDK

I fog the trophy room once or twice a year with a fogger containing permethrin. Home depot has them. I also use the Protex once a year. The premethrin fogger will kill the carpet beetle & all other bugs in the area & Protex does it's thing on the mounts.
So far it has worked well.
