Now that Im alone in the house and I can finally have a Trophy Room; Im having some room design headaches. Do I keep it exclusively game animals or add some of my military awards and pictures etc?

Is there some sort of protocol when it comes to these things?

That would be considered sacrilegious, and the room decor police will toss you in the clink for life. Wink

Room decorating is usually a reflection of the individuals interests and tastes. So many factors to consider....colors, lighting, and purpose. There are ways to display military keepsakes in shadow boxes and shelving that could compliment the taxidermy.

Here's a few ideas....

If you earn military awards you should display then however you see fit. After all, you earned them.

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

It's your house, you can do whatever you want. In my house trophies can be found all arond the first floor, and are mixed in will all sorts of other stuff. I'm slowly trying to move trophies and other dispay stuff from various geographic regions closer together, so there is a bit of logic to it, but other than that, I don't worry about it too much. As long as I feel comfortable, it is OK.

I keep telling my wife it's about Fung Shue (spelling is probably wrong). I tell her we need balance. Over the fireplace is the Greater Kudu. To the right is my Gemsbok and then she left a flying pheasant to left of the kudu? I tell her to take the pheasant down and hang the Waterbuck. Heck, everybody has pheasants. I tell her she needs Fung Shue in the family room. She says I need a restraining order on hanging dead stuff on the walls. All-in-all she's more understanding than most women. And she doesn't complain when that little bitch , of low moral character, named Dixie and sports an orange collar climbs into bed with us at night. I guess the pheasant can stay, but maybe when the Christmas tree comes down I can hang the Waterbuck?

He didn't ask about colors, dimensions, sun angles, spacing considerations, etc. The question is about whether he should mix and match his own belongings. How the hell is anyone supposed to answer that question?

I'll offer this assistance: yes, he should absolutely flush and wash hands after using the bathroom...

I think hunting trophies/game animals look best when mixed with other items, such as unique and tasteful furniture, paintings, photographs, curios, and yes, military awards and pictures. My ideal trophy room would have the highly personal items located near my desk, and the less personal items spread about the rest of the room. And no, I don't think Edelweiss's question is dumb. Most guys never open an interior design magazine, and thus need a little help in this area.

Better hurry up. I think I just noticed some kids playing on your lawn. You might miss a chance to yell at them.

Yell? Ha, ha. Try rocksalt launched at around 1000FPS!

Wink

BTW, I'd like to get your input on something: next week I am having a dinner party. Mind sharing your thoughts on what I ought to serve for dinner? How about color of napkins, and what kind of soap my guests wouldn't be offended by? TIA for the insight.

Roll Eyes wave

To answer the question in a serious (briefly, now) way: it's YOUR stuff, OP. Do what makes you happy. I guess everyone's different, but who gives a bloody monkey's funky what sort of 'protocols' or customs anyone *else* has for displaying your collection? I'm an avid bird hunter, and I have cases that I display my birds in. In the case I also have other personal stuff. So, there's my position.

In all seriousness. If you didn't give a "bloody monkey's funky" why did you bother to blast the guy? Perhaps some inner need I'm not seeing. Just sayin'

Kamo Gari--I have heard the phrase "Something went over like a pork chop at a Jewish wedding". So I'd gather if you are having any Jewish guests at your dinner party, I'd not serve porkchops. As to color of napkins, what color wine will you be serving? I don't think those two interrelate anyways. None of the etiquette books I have read mention it. Then again I have read none of the etiquette books so I might be way off base.

Thanks, sounds like solid advice!

The military uses German Shepherds for sentry duty and drug detection. If you are going to display military items, I'd only display any stuffed German Shepherds you may have, but no other animals.

I have a friend with a great trophy room with both his military memorabilia & his trophies.
It looks great & they are both of equal importance to him.
The military mem. has its own section & draws quite a lot of attention.

Kamo you crack me up! LOL

To the OP, yes, you keep your military memorabilia in one area.

If you were to spread it out among your hunting trophies it would look like you acquired them during your military experience. And I assume you were never at war with plainsgame.

Mine are mixed, the room is the story of my life; and of my accomplishments. The primary difference is that I have not had photos of my hunting trophies (if you wish to characterize them that way) from RVN.

I even have a picture of my wife shooting an MP-5 at the police range about twenty years ago on a shelf.
