Texas Mule Deer wall pedestal

I had my taxidermist (Green's Taxidermy, Jacksonville, TX) do my 2007 Texas Mule Deer as a wall pedestal. The old buck's hide was missing lots of hair (due to a really severe summer tick infestation, according to taxidermist) when I shot him, but the mount turned out really well.

I really hate the "ears forward buck on high alert" look, so I asked Cary to just put them in a natural posture, and since the hide was so rough, I just suggested that he put the best shoulder forward.

In field photo:

And results of the Cary's efforts:

I am almost positive your deer is a hybrid, do you have any meat from him left? I would contact your A&M and see if they have a biologist that could check.

Small ears, mid point face, intermediate antlers including large brow tines, and intermediate coloration.

Neat buck, worth finding out.

I'm sure I have some meat left, along with the lower jaw that still has some jerked meat on him. I shot the buck in Reagan County between Big Lake and Iraan.

The "small ears" is more of an artifact of the way I had him mounted - since I didn't mount him on "high alert" ears forward, they look small, but they really aren't - they are very definitely typical mule deer-sized ears.

Obviously, the only answer to the potential hybrid question is DNA testing, but nothing about the deer's coat, body size, habits, tail, etc suggests whitetail influence to me - his body was very much in line with all the mule deer in the area . . . perhaps the strong brow tines might be suggestive of hybridization, but almost all of the Texas desert mulies in that area have strong brow tines so I don't put much weight on that.

Nice Buck Troy, congrats! I can tell you having hunted Deer for many years and spending 17 years as a pro Taxidermist, they will lose a lot of hair due to ticks. Once they get an infestation, those Bucks will rub their self raw trying to get rid of them. I've had the same problem with a few I've taken from Fort Campbell. Good hunting, David

Beautiful rack and mount.

Question, what type of wall base do you have that pedestal mount attached with?

The center of gravity of this one was just off the shoulder, so Cary attached a board to mount it to the wall. The hanger is inset into the board, and the mount hangs on a nail driven into a stud on the wall.

I hope that answered your question?

Nice deer and nice mount. The tick thing is interesting. I shot my best Mulie ever about 2 months ago here in Nevada. Its hair was in bad shape and I was worried it was how we'd handled the deer in the field but the taxidermist showed me all of the imbeded ticks in the neck and shoulders.
