i'am just getting started with this whole casting bullet thing. i've been casting for 45 colt with no problems. i've been sizing them on a star sizer and it's been working out great. i've been using 50/50 lube. my question is. is there a lube that i can use for low speed and get no leading. the 50/50 has been working out real good but it seams to be real easy to rub off if the bullets roll around. i'am looking to be able to size/lube a bunch at one time and be able to store them. maybe a hard lube would be the answer. if so what one do i go with.

I like JAVELENA lube for this. It's easy to use, works well, and stays in the lube groove, also requires very little heat to apply in STAR machine.

My casting and lubing started for CAS and I cast and lubed in quantity. I made my own lube from 2/3 bees wax to 1/3 vaseline and it stays in the lube groove, is not too sticky for handling and only needs heating in the sizer in the colder weather. I use the same lube that works at the 800-100 fps speeds of the 44 spcl up to 2400+fps in my 7x57 and 404 Jeffery.
I go through lots of lube and making my own to this simple but effective recipe has been very cost effective (read cheap) and leaves more $ for powder etc.

For decades I used the NRA 50:50 formula lubes. Got interested in higher performance lubes and tried several (including some of the more famous designer lubes).

As I was also getting into rifles I tried Carnauba Red ... which reduced the metal fouling and the smoke in both rifles and pistols. Is cheap and doesn't require the hassle of making it.

I use it for everything from 9mm pistol to .458 AR and .470 NE rifle.

i think i'am gonna try some other lubes but how do i get the rest of the old lube out of the star sizer? or do you have to just waste it and squirt it out?

Right here on this same page in fact right below this is a thread--WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CAST BULLET LUBE? I think it covers lubes pretty well. Hard lubes--they possibly work for commercial casters that ship their bullets, but I see no other use for them.

I pulled the brass plug out of my star, put the sizer on a hot plate and turned up to medium heat. Also put a piece of HD foil under the sizer to channel the lube to a container. Worked well

I like LBT Blue soft and I have heard nothing buy glowing reports with carnauba red.

When I change lubes, I just drop in another one & in 20-30 bullets, the old lube is gone. If you want a little harder lube that runs great, go to WhiteLabel lubes; http://www.lsstuff.com/lube/ They make a great product for very little money. The CarnubaRed is a harder lube, needs about 92deg to flow into the Star, drys harder than 50/50 lubes.

I personally prefer the performance of the softer lubes over all velocity ranges. Get some good boxes to store your bullets in. The only advantage I've seen of hard lubes is for commercial casters who dump a pile of bullets loose in a box and want them to arrive with lube in the grooves at their customers.

The other advantqage to harder lubes is hotter shooting temps & less mess loading. Soft sticky lubes make a mess of a seating die sooner than later. WhiteLabel has soft 50/50 lubes & one called BAC that is semihard. Even the CarnubaRed I use only needs 92-95 deg to flow in a sizer. It stays put int he grooves upto 1500fps+ too.
