Forecast has changed and can't hunt this spot with a north wind, which we'll have the rest of the week. Mad

Looks like it will be a week from tonight before the forecast changes, but we all know weather folks--so we'll see.

I should be back in the shooter's seat Monday evening for a pig-murderin' session---

Rolled up about 6:45 and got situated, Windows down , towel on the outside mirror for a rest, AR and thermal locked and loaded. About 15 later I scan East and watch the pig parade across the fence-28 of them.

Do a quick scan and nothing at the feeder. Drink a bit of coffee, nibble on a cookie, swat at a ‘skeeter, then do another scan. Repeat, repeat, then about 7:20, Target—12 o’clock, 90 yds!

Hang up the hand scanner, put on the earmuffs and snuggle up to the rifle and turn on the scope. Good-sized one but it is either head on or tail on so I wait. Doesn’t take long for him to turn broadside and I click off the safety, settle in, take my calming breath, squeeze it off. Bang, flop, peddle peddle kick the feeder leg (ding ding ding) and it’s over.

Gonna sit until my buddy on the other side of the ridge calls it a night just in case. Pictures to follow when I get home.

Hung around for 3 more hours as the pig parade across the east fence continued and was headed to one of the other tanks, so I walked down there and settled in for 30-45 minutes. I could hear them across the fence in the neighbor's tank but they opted not to come test my marksmanship--on the walk back to the truck I counted 35 of them, plus 5 'yotes.

Here's the one I shot tonight--last one was 150 and this one is 175+ though I didn't weigh him. Wired him to a tree by the jaw and snout so I can recover his tusks later.

Bill--the 35 across the fence were all adult pigs, not a sow with piglets nor any smaller shoats. When those sows hatch out it is going to be a really target rich environment. I just wish the landowner across the fence would let me help with his hog problems too.

A quick question.

You said you wired the pig to a tree. Do you not harvest the meat from the pigs you shoot?

Went on a wild boar hunt in Germany many lifetimes ago. All the meat was taken and sold. My only experience hunting boar. God I would love to hunt boar again.

Kind regards,

Carpediem

I kill so many and have so few takers that many get dragged to the "buzzard buffet". I deliver a field-dressed carcass (minus the head) to takers. Used to have a half-dozen folks I could call and they would take one or several. Not so much any more.

Right now I have an "order" for a big one to have the hams cured--

People would tell me "I want a pig call me any time and I will come pick it up". I called at 11:30 PM and if they answered at all, it would be "I cant come right now, quarter it up and put it on ice"! It did not take three times and I quit calling! If I ate them, I kill more than I could eat. The landowners want them gone. Just like fire ants, gophers and coyotes, I am just here to help! People are the only critters that don't support others in their death!

They are a non native species that is very destructive. Many are killing them to try to control the population. If no one is willing to come pick the carcass up to harvest the meat, what is a hunger to do?

If you catch a mouse in a mouse trap should you be required to eat it?

I use a 12-ga semi-auto and 3"magnum #4 buckshot which have 41 .24" pellets per round. Typically I sit in my bow stand at 20 yds or so and wait until I get 4-5 with their heads down and relatively close together. I also have some hevi-shot loads, #2 shot which is typically used for coyotes, etc. This is the result of one shot from my 20-ga with a 3" mag #3 buckshot load.

ok, i need help from the experts. we were on a good run, up to 7 in the trap at one time. since then nada. game cam showed 10 coons in a bunch decimating the corn, followed by the deer. got tired of it, sprinkled some diesel on the corn. since then NOTHING has come in for days. son is pissed says the diesel even scared off the pigs, despite all the good things i read about it. put out some plain corn a few yards away, same story, nada. trap is about 2 miles away thru the brush. PIA checking it every morning. thinking about burying some corn hundred yds or so away from house and shooting em from back porch with a 308 with a can on it. it groups 1" or less at 50 yds with 180 gr RN SP sierras. need to put it on paper at 100 yds. i'm currently trying to decide on either a night scope or a remote lighting system for the buried corn, depending on finances. and yes, we eat every bit we kill. got me and wife and 2 grandkids and several neighbors we are trying to keep fed. best b b que ever with chubacaba (sp) rub on it. anyway, all any and all suggestions very appreciated. thanks

John--they can be cyclical--I have 3 places I currently hunt and on two of them, had a solo or pair, maybe 3 show up once or twice a week for a month. Then last week we got 3+ inches of rain and now I have more frequent visitors. I set one trap where there is lots of activity but they eat all the corn up to the trap door and stop---they are trap shy for sure.

At the other place, I have been seeing the same pattern--1-2-3 pigs at most. However, you may have read about my "pig parade" across the fence on the property next door. Last week I walked up on a group of 4, and killed one. Going back today and check cameras and do some lighting work and I'm betting I may find a big bunch has moved across the fence for the free eats--

Be patient and they'll be back.

Got it--I have remote lighting at both places but one is not working now. Will replace the bad one with new ones tomorrow. Here's what I use at one place:

https://www.amazon.com/InnoGea...01&ref_=sb_s_sparkle

And here's the other setup---but this is the one that is out right now. Less than 3 month's old and I need to investigate why--

https://www.amazon.com/Lights-...c2-8996-f96e7b0f409c

I don't like the motion-sensor activated ones---spooks my target when the light comes on suddenly. The white light doesn't cause them alarm after a few nights--

I use an AR with an XQ50 thermal scope on it--I can see critters 800yds away and can tell coons from skunks from possums at 300 yds easy. Not cheap, but worth every penny. I also have a hand-held thermal scanner so I don't have to be constantly waving the rifle around--my source for these is Outdoor Legacy and Jason is the man--

https://outdoorlegacygear.com/

Any more questions, post 'em up and I'll try to answer.

thats a lotta good infor right there. thanks. unfortunantely my retirement is in the stock market (my state gov pension is a joke) and its all but gone for now so those thousands of $$ scopes are outta the question. the solar lites look good though. maybe someday. read about the companys founder. we're in a similiar situation, thats why we have the grandkids. we tell em the pig meat is unicorn burgers so they'll eat it. but after being here so long they now know better. he's 7 and dying to shoot a hog. he thinks. anyway thanks for the links etc

jefe--when you get a litter all gathered with their heads down in a corn pile it works. But, that means you have to walk up and pour the corn into the pile and not stand off and sling it--

John--they are photocell activated---on at dark and then off at sunrise unless the battery runs down first. They have two brightness settings as well. I only put the two up out of the 4 as that is as much brightness as I normally use when bowhunting. With the thermal, I just like enough light to be able to know when a critter comes in without using my hand-held scanner.

George....i really really appreciate the offer. but...there are other factors in play here. we live on our 10 acres joining 350 acres that we have total access to, (took 10 years) because my son and i maintain the whole 350 acres owned by a very old couple ( 99 and 89) very opinionated and set in their ways. we spent months brush cutting most of the place so more grass could grow for the cows. if i left a light on at night in the brush it would cause so much concern we might screw the whole deal up. we were recently able to build a covered shooting range not on our 10 acres only
because their son demanded full access to it which he never uses. ma and pa kettle won't last THAT long even as spry as they are so we are in the planning stages of another trap on our acres. even so, a light on all night would cause a frenzy of anxiety with the other neighbors in a 5 mile radius. we would be called on to go find and stamp out the homeless camp i imagine! and the other thing is...i'm so inept at computers etc i couldn't post a pic on this site if you had a gun at my head. other sites i can do that, not this one.
but again...THANK YOU for the offer. PM to be sent on something else.
