I have hunted hogs with about all calibers from the 22 L.R. on up..I like the 25-35 Win carbine for walking or chasing dogs, and the 6x45 for stand hunting or just mossying around...but if I saw a hog like Butches I would go home and lock the door and sit on the couch with my 450-400 double rifle in my lap.. shocker

I hunt with dogs and most of us carry pistols for when the dogs have more pigs bayed than they can handle. Most carry .357s, my son-in-law carries a 38 with my handloads, and I carry a 41 S&W Mountain Revolver. I sometimes carry a Styer (sp) Mod 95 in 8x56R as it is light, powerful and I'm not afraid to mark it up.

I shot my one and only Hog in Latham,OH with Bill73's 9,3X74R with Norma 296 grain comm. As all of my handloads were unusable due to my (2) missing firearms Thanks to Airline mishandling of my guns. It did the job with one shot kill (240 lbs)The Hog was shot at 75+ yards

Rojovin -- welcome to the forum! Not receiving my firearms is the biggest fear I have when I travel with them. That really sucks! I take it that you receieved your firearms eventually?

Post up a photo of your hog, we'd love to see it!

Geez----you guys either hsve phallic sympols for guns/calipers or you want to use your PP/WWE guns to kill game----neither has a place here----keep your gun in your pants or experiment on something that is not alive-----these are living creatures, treat them as so !!!
I'm not a tree hugger, but give me a break !!!

Man I dislike this kind of reply. I've read all the posts here, and none struck me as" phallic ",or indeed excessivly boastfull. You have a wide range of answers because you have a wide range of different situations, like's and dislikes, and customs. Thats the good thing about this place. The best rifle for hunting pigs with, is the one thats in your hand at the time. Wether its a .22, a 280 (my choice) or a 500 T,Rex. As long as your enjoying yourself.

I guess you like small-caliber rifles!

Go back and read what we have written. Nowhere in this thread has anyone advocated these large calibers as some sort of need. Lots of guys here hunt DG in Africa, and I can think of no better practice than on a live target -- much better than paper punching.

Lots of the guys with big-bores don't scope them as they are meant to get up close and personal with the game they are hunting. All of my big-bores are wearing iron sights. It takes a lot of practice to become proficient with rifles that recoil hard -- and I'm not talking .300 win mag hard.

But, like with a .223, placement is still everything, so big-bores don't offer some magic elixir for poor shot placement.

That said, small hyper-velocity rounds tend to do a lot more meat damage than big-bores. So why not use them? Better than letting 'em sit in the gun safe collecting dust -- JMHO.

Reads, to me, that you are a man of firm opinion, inability to allow others to do what they feel is correct, and limited experience, but I could be wrong.

Here's a nice sow I killer with a Mak 90. Light a compact for stomping thru palmettos. I used Wolf 123gr HP's and dropped her with a shoulder shot at 20 yards as she ran across the clearing I was at. Things got spooky for a minute after I shot her as there were 5-6 other pigs in the area and I was low on ammo. Can't climb trees to well anymore.

The right caliber for wild hogs is what ever you choose, from .22 lr to 577NE ! Put the bullet where is is needed and you got pork. The need for stopping power is another story.
The DRSS (double rifle shooter's society) holds fun hog hunts twice per yr, and hogs are taken with just about all cartridges chambered in double rifle. These range from 8mm to 577NE. On our last hunt, 15 members killed 31 hogs in two days, and we have never taken less that 15 hogs in two days. Here is a picture from Winter of 2007, that represents one day's kill, of hogs. Not included are the deer taken on the same two days!

I am glad that the Mac 90 was effective. I picked up an SKS that shoots like a house a-fire. I got a coyote with it at 331 yards in December. We have a bunch of Russian boar here in southern CO. now. Some brilliant individual brought them in and allowed them to get away from him. The state wants them gone and has opened it up to anyone with a hunter safety card, no limits. I was wanting to take the SKS out and get some pork but wasn't sure if it would be enough gun. I guess enough is whatever you shoot well.

I shoot 10 or so a year, my favorite pig loads are 160 gr. Speer hotcors or 140 gr. Nosler partitions out of my 7x57 going 2600-2700fps. But as they are pests I have shot them with my 223 and other rifles including my 35 Whelen. I take neck shots and low shoulder shots with the bigger rounds and just neck shots with the little ones.
