Son-in-law has been having a hog problem. He ran into a small herd a couple of days ago, he dropped one and rolled another, but lost it as it got dark.

With the above in mind, I intended to take a stand not far from where he had his last little hog run in. Never made it to the stand. When I got to the pasture, about a hundred yards out was a herd of hogs. I had the wind in my favor so I took my time and went to prone. The closes hog to me was head on so I picked one broadside and shot. The hog went down at the shot. The closes one to me headed for the woods, I jumped up and got off two shots and it looked like I had connected, but it made the woods. The rest of the herd broke across the pasture for the woods on the far side. I picked out the biggest and cranked out two more shots. Acturally I cranked out three, but the last only went click. No more bullets. The hog though went down to my suprise.

Well I started off to check out the first one when I observed the second in the woods, it hadn't gone far. It was a sow, which had taken one in the guts and another through the boiler room. The first had a broken back but was still alive, no bullets for a coup d' grace, so I cut its throat with my pocket knife. The third had one round go through its boiler room. It was a large boar, about 250 lbs or so.

Called a friend who wanted some hogs for a get-together and loaded him up.

I hate that sound!

Way to go, it is fun getting into the herds cause after the first shot, it is like shooting quail...

I've only used two loads in it so far, 168 gr. winchester target loads and my own 130 gr. handloads using IMR 4198. I've only had the rifle for a month or so. Both loads are suprisingly accurate. I know that my handloads are a bit odd for the caliber, but I have a ton of the 4198 so I'm trying to use it up. It is kind of useful in the carbine length. It seems to kill well, four hogs and no complaints.

4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.

6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.

12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.

Ah, Mike, thanks for bringing wisdom to the conversation. You're assertions even when masked make nothing but sense.

Ah bring enough ammo, I always seem to have enough ammo except when I don't. I mean, how many times do you need more than 5 rounds, I almost always carry 6 rounds. But on this occassion I only had 5, cause I used one round last week and didn't replace it. I mean what were the odds I'd need more than 5, but I did. And yep Mike, you're right, this is not the first time you've admonished me for not having what I needed when I needed it. So I will make an effort to carry at least 7 rounds with me at all times. tu2

I'll pm you the address in case you want to send me a Christmas Card, or you're in the area and want coffee or a pig hunt. As far as the ammo carrier, thanks but I'm sure I have one or two laying around here somewhere. Not sure it would help, cause I'd probably not replace the rounds as I use them. I mean, how many times do you need more than 5 really. But I will carry 7 or so, as a wise man said, better to have and not need than....

Thanks again

WOW, you guys are good. These hogs were a bit scattered out and obsured by brush, so I really didn't have the opertunity to try for a two or more in a shot, this time. I have been thinking about trying it for some time. I guess there are many factors to consider, such as size of pigs, bullet constrution etc. Having a .458 Lott should over ride most factors. Big Grin

Marco you have my permission to hijack any and all of my post as I enjoy your input always. I currently have a 15 round belt slide filled with .30/40 cartridges on my side. I may be learning.

When I'm bush-hogging or passing a box blade trying to repair hog damaged pastures, I curse the hogs.

But, if they were erradicated, I'd be diminshed truely.

I have taken a few this winter, nothing to brag about and really did not think about pictures. I did stumble across some very large tracks and have determined that that pig has got to go before corn planting, which they are in the process of now.

The big pig has not come to my bait, yet, but has made numerous trips around behind the camera and trap.

I have managed to capture some images of a couple of very nice leopards and a long tail yellow cat.
