I mentioned in my other thread that I had been hunting that boar for several months. He, like most of the hogs on/around my place, tend to do most of their moving at night. I have been toying with buying a night vision scope for a while, but I just couldn't make myself drop the $2K(+/-) for a decent one.

I had a brain storm and did some research, and a much cheaper alternative is a solar powered, motion sensing security light. I ordered one a couple of weeks ago and set it up with a red lense on it. My game camera was also set up on the corn pile too so I could monitor the hogs reaction to the light. It didn't appear to have any effect on them.

Last nights hogs was my first kill using the light, and it obviously worked like a charm.

My light set up cost me $100 versus the cost of a night vision scope.

That's excellent, Jeff! Obviously very cost effective!

Jeff-

Thanks for the great idea! thumb I will give it a whirl.

I've been thinking about a night vision scope but could not justify the expense, either.

Here is my set up. This is in a bottom area that is mainly a hog corridor for moving up and down the creek.

Has anyone tried using the solar powered sidewalk lights fixed to the legs of their feeders so that the lights are on all night and the hogs will get used to them?

The set up you have came up with looks great, and the price is better than some of the other systems I have looked at.

I don't see why that wouldn't work.

Jeff:

GREAT idea! You've got the makings of a business there. I'm not sure how much trouble it would be to put together, but I'd rather pay a bit more and buy it from one person, "ready to go" so to speak.

Did you get the 10W or the 30W version. How far from the feeder is it positioned? Obviously it doesn't have to be really bright just enough to shoot by. Would you buy the same size light again or go to the other size?

Well, to be honest I spent most of my day trying to find a way how to fool pigs at night Big Grin

I have tried nearly everything and I must say that it seems you have had the BEST idea I have heard so far....

GREAT idea, maybe I will give it a try, THANKS.

I read in another site a very good idea with sensors. Some company in the States is selling a system with three movement sensors and a unit that the hunter has in his hand, depending which sensor is activated the unit will turn on a very small light indicating from where is the pig is coming... I used that same light about a year ago but did not put a red lense in mine it did not seem to make any differance to the hogs they got use to it before I could hunt over it the first time. worked great untill the mice ate the wires to the charger. mounted mine on a t post near my feeder. also tried a few on all night solar lights but they are not very bright.

the only problem with this motion light is when it goes off a lot in one night the low battry will make it blink three times then go out instead of staying on so kinda sporty to shoot under it then.

I am using the 10 watt model and would definitely buy it again.

I don't use a feeder. I just pour a little corn on the ground at the base of the tree in the picture. I only live 2.5 miles by 4 wheeler from this camera and check it everyday.

If I lived that close to a year-round hunting spot, I would get no work done! Big Grin

My 4 year old 4 wheeler has just over 6000 miles on it. I have made a few trips into the woods. Wink
