Been a while since the pigs have been coming regularly--I think due to folks on adjoining places starting up their feeders for bow season perhaps. At any rate, I went bowhunting tonight (unsuccessfully) and when I got down, just drove another 14 miles to the pig place. Got settled in about 7:45, and the feeder went off at 8:02. About 45 minutes later I saw a dark blob moving across the pasture towards the feeder. Put the binocs on it and it was a pretty big pig (for this area). It finally made it into the feeder pen and into the lights. I had gotten my earplugs in, the bipod up, safety off, and was ready, but took another few minutes before the pig turned and gave me the shot I wanted. So--bang, flop, kick, kick, kick, dust everywhere and I figured it was a "dirt nap" for the pig. I chambered another round and when I looked at the feeder again--NO PIG! Dang--then I heard a long, drawn-out grunting sound coming from my right about 75 yds away. I figured the pig had run and hit the gully and died there. Packed everything up and hung my chair back in the tree where the cows can't get it, and headed out. I have to walk about 30 yds away from the feeder to cross the gulley before I get into the open pasture and can see the feeder again. Was walking to the feeder, looking down, watching for holes and cow patties, and looked up at the feeder from about 40 yds out. There were pigs under it so I sat down and got ready to shoot when I realized I didn't have my earplugs in. Dug them out of the pack and inserted them and just as I got ready to shoot-the feeder spun again (on schedule). Pigs scattered, but I figured they'd be back in a few minutes so I just sat and waited. They bunched up about 40 yds from the feeder and about the same distance from me--crosswind. After a minute or so, they hauled off up the hill. I waited another 10-15 minutes to see if they might have changed their mind, but no luck. Walked on down to the feeder, and there on the downhill side, about 5 yds from the feeder was the hog I shot. So much for my hearing it 75 yds from the feeder--
It was a fat (probably pregnant) sow, which I estimated at 115-130 lbs.

Nice going on popping the piggie! thumb

But do you know why the others did not come back? They picked up the scent of blood -- PIG blood -- and looked over to your location. One of them thought he could make out a human form in the night, realized it was you and yelled: RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!! He's baa-aaack! Big Grin

Bobby-when I got to the feeder I was surprised to see the sow laying so close. I figured the pigs milling around under the feeder was confirmation that she had run off some distance. Hope you can get out and at them soon!

It was so much fun I think I'll go back Wednesday night--I still have an IOU out for a BBQ-sized piggie.

Perfect for you jeffe, but my buddy wants one to take with him on his Nebraska bow hunt and this one was too big for his pit. He says more like 75-80 lbs so it will fit on the grill. Wink
