Slammer,
nice thing about the x54 is you can use good quialty .311 bullets, 150s and 180!!

on the high fence, depending on how it's setup, it's still hunting... as a rule of thumb, 500 acres, with totaly natural and heavy cover is hunting.. 200 aint... 1000 of pastur is shopping

Man you surely as hell are not gonna tell me that 500 acres fenced is hunting. Hell man that would be like going out here and shooting a cow or something. That is the problem people like you consider 500 acres high fenced hunting. I'm not even gonna start

and why would I use .311 diameter bullets when there are all kinds of .308 bullets the ones that fit in it

Welcome to the wonderfully mismatched world of mosin nagant rifles. Just because it says "7.62x54r" doesn't exactly mean it will shoot .308" bullets worth a shit. 7.62 is a misnomer with these rifles. Bore diameter on these rifles runs anywhere from .309"-.314". I suggest you slug your bore and figure out what size you have. Both the mosins I have are accurate rifles, but only with .311" bullets. Both of my rifles slug at .312"-.313". Matter of fact, I recently had to put a .311" expander ball in my expander/decapper die to properly size the cases for the correct bullet size.

Norma, Winchester, and Sellier & Belliot all load .311" bullets in their factory ammo. The surplus stuff you might try is .311" as well.

Try some .308's and maybe they'll shoot properly... Otherwise, you may want to start scoping out some .311" bullets.

Slammer,
As Tex said, it's a nominal .311 bore, just like the 7,7 jap and the 303 bit, and the 7.62x39, as it's measured by the eruo-standard. I've had a couple x54, and they all hated .308 bullets... keyholed in fact.
As for 500 acres being hunting, sure, I'll tell you that... if it's 500 acres of natural heavy woods. Of course, 500 acres is only nearly a mile by a mile, something that should be considered... Not you your tastes, that's cool... I do suggest that you visit on of those places and see how it's hunted... they are generally no pay to scout..

If it's 500 acres of table top pasture, walk away... if it's nearly a swaure mile of the thichest brush and bottom land you've ever seen... well, you make the call.

After all, it's you rifle, your ethics, and you call, all the way around.

Slammer,

Any experianced hunter knows that 500 acres in one area can be very differant from 500 in another. It depends on how dense the bush is and what the terrain is like. I could show you places up here where you could hide a battalion and not even know they were there because the forest is so dense, and far from flat. And animals are better at hiding than humans.

I gather from your posts that you are not as experianced as you would like us to believe. Or perhaps not even a hunter??? So criticizing others opinions, and saying that the moderator here on AR is an idiot says more about you than him...

As I posted, it's your call and your ethics. It's probably not for you, if you feel this way.

I'm with ErikD on this one. I know places of maybe 50 acres where you can't see your hand in front of your face, let alone some animal at 20 yds. A fenced ranch certainly can be hunting - have a look at the place and judge each one on its own conditions. You gain much more knowledge with your eyes and ears than with your mouth...

And, all my mosins need to use .311 bullets. the_captain

EricD,
As for your information I am a hunter, and yes I have hunted all my life.
FYI, I hunted some and guided on a boar hunting preserve in TN, It is like a couple thousand acres with a big high fence around it. And yes the place is mountanious with all kinds of brush etc. etc. No matter what you say i don't care if it's 5 thousand acres if the animal can't get out unless there is a hole in the fence or something like that then it is not hunting period. that is shooting not hunting

If you all call it hunting why don't we get a lion fence in 500 acres. and then you pay me about 10 or 15K to hunt him.

Slammer,

I have hunted wild hogs and preserve hogs in TN... I think texas is harder. Texas scrub is very thick. Don't knock it till you try it.
