Hey guys, I lurk here mostly, but thought I would share my hog hunt with you.

I was fortunate enough to get to go hog hunting close to Jena, La, close to the Quachita River. I was hunting with an old rolling block in 45-70 shooting FL sized Rem brass, 70 graisn of 1.5 Swiss, under a Lyman 457122 345 grain hollow point bullet lubed with Black Magic lube. We walked into hogs before daylight, I not gonna say I was scared, but, a lesser man would have panic'd. 8)

So I sit in a ground blind for the first hour of light, I saw hogs but not the big kinda hog I was after. I decided to get up and slip north east and look over some ridge tops. On the second ridge top I peeked over, there he was, 50 yards broadside, facing right. I leveled the copper penny just behind the front shoulder, broke the shot, and the hog did not flinch, he just started walking straight ahead. I loaded another and clocked off another round at about 70 yards to the same spot as the previous shot. All the hog did was start trotting away from me, I knew I had not missed twice but I was amazed the hog had not so much as squealed or kicked when hit with my hunting load. He trotted away from me and I was trotting after him and I was able to get three blows down the barrel not using a blow tube. The hog stopped broad side to me on the same side as before, all I knew to do was keep pouring lead to him, so I did, in the same spot. This time he fell. I cut the distance to point blank, he was still alive so I put one straight up between his front legs that exited his back just off the side of the backbone. He was still alive so a knife was used finish him off.



I was amazed at what had just happened because I could not imagine anything in North America taking 4 of these rounds thru the boiler room and still being alive. Turns out a big hog is by far the toughest animal to kill I have ever hunted. Let me explain, All three broadside shots hit exactly where aimed, two bullets were recovered under the skin on the off side under the skin. The other two shots were pass thru's. The recovered bullets retained virtually all it's weight, both weighed over 340 grains after being recovered.

The only thing I can figure about the need for several shots is low velocity, and no expansion. It's just about like shooting a large hog with a 45 Long Colt, with hard cast bullets.

Next time,
If you have to shoot twice, break them down. Aim for the shoulders so that if it does turn on you it cant run.
I tend to always try to break the shoulders only because of a cripled right leg so I dont want to track them far.
I used to love trophy hog hunting when I was younger. There was always that little bit of danger involved as to who was going to kill who first.

If I sound a little over the top when it comes to large hogs, please excuse me. I got owned by one back in '92. That's when I got the bad leg.

I love reading stories about how tough these feral hogs are. When I was guiding I was always impressed with these animals, watching them run for hundreds of yards after being hit behind the shoulder with arrows, .243, etc etc!

Goat--I was talking to Barvid about the hog, and he said the animal went 347 on scales. We were discussing the four shots, and the truth is, Barvid went on the hunt on short notice, and took ammo loaded with bullets he normally uses for white tails. I suspect that he will use a bit more bullet next time, although these mushroomed and stayed together well. No doubt a heavier bullet would have hit harder. In any case, it is a really good hog. Make that HAWG.

I weighed in 144 lbs of meat this morning. We gonna have sausage for a couple of years

sometimes hogs are REALLY slow to realize they are actually dead...

heart/lung shot for them, what which don't bleed much, isn't the end of the road RIGHT THERE (or sprint for 50 yards and keel over) like it is for most anything else.

then again, them boys knife fight for breakfast, every day...

Fine hog, great size too.
No need for bigger or tougher bullets when a hunk of lead goes clear thru 'em like that and mushroom well too.
just hit 'em in different places. Base of skull, ear, or between ear & eye are DRT shots most of the time.
OR anywhere along the spine will put anything down for keeps. Just gotta figure where the spine is, sometimes that's a bit of a challenge.
You did will on this one. Hope you paid attention where things are while cutting it up so you can place your shots next time to drop 'em where they stand.

Enjoy the eats, only way that little bit will last two yrs is if you're selfish with it, haha!
