Killed hogs for 50+yrs in Florida & Georgia and many days as many as 7 or 8 in one day. It depends on how you butcher it, the marinade you use and how you cook it...Everyone has their opinion and I have mine! Wink

Being from Cali...I have to say I wish I owned stock in whatever company is going to make 22 or 17hmr in all solid copper cause this thing just jacked up the squirl and rabbit hunts....I prefer the Barnes for Pigs anyway. The Condor is gracefull from afar and UGLY up close.

Not to highjack the original topic so....I have think they are a problem to only those who have a problem with them....Seems like those people like to have the problem of overcharging others to hunt on them on their property. I havent seen to many of them on public lands.

I would rather Boar Hunt for my Bacon!

Is it just a rumor that has spread itself so thoroughly that it's been accepted as fact?

Friends here in then Canyon who are sheep and goat ranchers find that when feral hog populations are high, their lamb crops are low. One year, they made a real effort to kill off the hogs prior to lambing season, and after killing off about 100 hogs of all shapes and sizes, found their lamb crop increased about 4-5x.

For those of us interested in things like native wetlands, the reintroduction of Eastern Turkey into the East Texas pineywoods, orchids, and whatnot, feral hogs cause real documented problems as well.

That said, they are fun to shoot, and they taste darn good!

Unfortunately for us, the Fish and Wildlife folks have taken to introducing black bears in the big parks. But they have yet to put in bear-proof storage bins for the hikers and back packers. Gonna be interesting when the populations get bigger and bolder.

Bears have been migrating from the Sierra del Carmen of Mexico since the mid 80s or so, and were naturally re-established in the Big Bend Region. I've got several buddies that have seen them on the roads from Sanderson to Black Gap (mostly crossing at night).

Young males in particular wander widely - we had one over on the Frio last summer that was photographed on a trail camera south of Leakey and then seen a couple of days later crossing the highway north of town.

Rebel Hog,
Sometimes as Will so aptly put, I think some of us live on different planets...

My family ranches in Texas, and hogs do tear up a pasture, they root huge area with deep holes, then rain causes erosion, the overall effect is quite costly, It costs my sister $8,000 a year in damages..We have delt with the pig problem since hogs were introduced by some brilliant sportsmen many years ago..

As a life time hunter and a person who has made his living in the hunting business I am prone to be very conservative with wildlife, the pig is my only exception..

On my familys ranch in Texas they hunt them, poison them, and trap them, all full time and year around, and the cannot hold back the numbers no matter what they do..everyone carries a gun in the Pickup and shoot them on sight..These are just pigs that were bought in a sale barn and someone turned them loose years ago and they like ants proliferated...

One of the reason ranchers charge peoplel to hunt is because the people can be about as destructive as the hogs...

I had a friend that wanted to hunt pigs, so I set it up for him to hunt pigs..He went out and set up his blind, scattered about 300 lbs. of corn out there and then only hunted it one time and the hogs came to the corn and moved in and rooted up a 200 yard area of the pasture...

If you are graciously allowed to hunt pigs on a ranch then learn enough to understand what is acceptable and what is not or else you will give us all a bad rap...it happens all to often.

Wild Hogs = Prairie Dogs of Texas

We shoot them like Prairie Dogs on our ranch. There are so many that we only keep the backstraps from the medium and large sows - all the other hogs go into the dump. I think the most we got in a weekend was over 30.

In the last year we have made some progress on the population and have hog panels around almost all of our feeders. They still root the heck out of the ground.

So far he has shown a remarkable inclination to not show up when I am sittng in that tripod. He probably circles the area and checks the wind before comming in to feed. The odds are against him though.

What was it Mel Gibson's character said in The Patriot - "Stay the course." He'd bound to make a mistake sooner or later. I'd like to see pics of him after the shot too. Big Grin

Play your cards right there and you could line up two or three per shot! I understand the troubles they cause you fellas, but I do have to admit that I'm a little jealous of all the targets. The last time I saw that many things to shoot in one place was a prairie dog town in Wyoming!
