hello everyone, i am graduating from college this year and have promised myself all four years to go on a road trip to california (i live in oregon) and hunt wild boars with my high school friend. i dont have a lot of money to blow, but i would love to get into some hogs if at all possible, as i have not been able to big game hunt the last four years since i have been in this darn new england school. i have an 8mm-06, 308 win, and 7mm Rem mag, which should all do nicely but mainly i just want to know if there is anywhere public in california i could find hogs and how to hunt them when i find a spot. i dont think i can afford a guide and would appreciate anyone's input on this subject. any advice anyone? thank you so much -manny

The pig hunting in public land in California isn't real good. Some places to try is Camp Roberts:

Fort Hunter Liggett:

Or BLM land:

Your best shot (pun intended) at a pig may be at Camp Roberts based on what I've read on the another forum.

thank you so much for the info! how about another question, perhaps the question i should have asked, how much can i get a decent guide or private land hunt for? i mean if im going to drive i should be willing to pay something, what can i expect? can i split it three ways or does everyone pay the same? i really have no idea how this works, and really just want to get into some hogs. thank you again! -manny

Manny,

Most of the private property pig hunts are guided hunts that vary from anywhere from $350 to $500. That's per person. I went on a $500 pig hunt with three guys and we all got our pigs. We hunted Fri PM, Sat AM & PM, Sun AM. The $500 included one pig and the gutting and skinning. They put the pigs in a walk in refrigerator to cool.

Go to this web site:

On the Hog and Javalina forum you'll find a lot of info on California hog hunting. Do a search on guides and you'll get info on a lot of the guide services.
