Collateral Damage on Deer Opening Day

Nothing in the way of a shooter buck ventured into my field of vision on the opening day of the regular Texas deer season (Sat, Nov 2), but apparently the hogs had not seen the memo that non-selective shooters with itchy trigger fingers would be afield carrying lethal weapons.

Both of these were loners, the first a (guesstimate) 180-lb boar that morning. The second, at a stand about four miles away, was a huge sow which had to have gone more than 200-lbs. They each went down DRT with a single shot from the Sako .308 Mannlicher you see in the photos using a 150 grain Ballistic Tip loaded to about 2825 fps from the 20" barrel of the carbine. Both shots were between 120 and 130 yards.

Well done! Those .30 cal/150 grain BTs are quite lethal, just as your outing last weekend proves.

I hope you get to fill your whitetail tags soon.

Nice. I'd rather eat a sow than a buck 7 days a week.

Darn respectable hogs.
Hey Bobby. Do you drink the Shiner beer? Makes me a little thirsty when I see your posts. Happy hunting Stonecreek.

Well, there are times I could definitely use one ha ha. But for me, alcohol is one of a number of things that precipitates migraines. It's been well over 30 years since I've had any alcohol.

I got 5 hogs opening weekend, all in different ways. #1 Shot a boar when he walked in after the feeder went off. #2 Bumped a sow while walking around. #3 Shot another pig when I stalked up to another feeder location late morning. #4 was a big boar I shot at a watering hole using a thermal. #5 was a sow sleeping in the turkey pear midday with the .45-70

I love the .45-70 for busting them in the thick brush.

Excellent. That's a porky looking sow. Lots of good chops and sausage there.

Sorry to hear that. A sibling has migraine sensitivities. Can't eat any sharp or aged cheese plus others. Git dem hogs.
