TAXIDERMY - real teeth or fake?

Gentlemen, we have been discussing this very topic in a thread about wild boar meat, and a lot of differing opinions have surfaced. I thought this topic may warrant its own thread. I stated in my last post on the wild boar meat thread that I would defy anyone to tell the difference between real and fake tusks on a good (and this is the key) mount. All taxidermy is not created equally. I will later post too wildly differing quality shoulder mounts for edification.

This is also a chance for you to share some of your mounts with the members here.

Agreed that a GOOD taxidermist could make a mermaid look real and alive. What I was referring to earlier is putting 5-6” tusk on a 150 pound pig, It just would not look natural. With that being said if the tusk were in conjunction with the body size and the work done by a good taxidermist, I don’t have a problem with that.
I shot a boar two weeks ago, 350 pound range, he had one tusk wore down to about one and one half inches and the others were broke off. I thought about mounting him but I did not because what would the length his real tusk unbroken and not worn have been? I have his skull wired to a tree so when the fire ants clean it off good I will retrieve it. I may even look into getting some falsies for him.

As promised.

Good taxidermy:

Poor taxidermy:

There is a stark difference between the believability of the two.

Whit:
Make you a deal, I've got several prints and would be happy to mail them to you IF you'll post 'em. I don't have a way to do it myself even if I knew how. Just pm your mailing info and they'll be on the way.

I've only had these two hogs mounted, only two I've killed so far. You'll also be able to see the cracks in the skin too. Along with the ears ripped up and half off from their fighting. These were honest damages to the pigs ears. Both were scabbed up quite a bit.

One was 140#, the other 200# on the money. Smaller one had one stub at the gums the other was maybe an inch long. The guy used the same length plastic on both. about 3" long I think the teeth look about right but, I have very little experience with feral/wild hogs. I don't really recall what the bigger one had for tusks, other than they were much longer than the other one's. I shot 'em both face on in the head, he bled all over the mouth and moved his head/mouth around in the dirty sand til there was a huge clod and mouth full that really wasn't hosed out very well before we left. I do remember holding my hand next to them, but, don't recall the length. Might be able to tell from the pics though.

I could take a couple pics of Dad's bear to show what happens with real teeth over the yrs. This might help convince the hard heads among us that don't want to listen to experience.

Let me know,
George

I like fake teeth on pigs, fake teeth done well.

And I can't remember which wild boar form supplier makes them, but they do them pre-painted and they are perfect.

So I can't see not using them.

The reason I like fake teeth is so I can put the teeth on a little board like they do in Europe.

I have always advised my clients on the javelina hunts to get the taxidermist to pull the upper and lower canines and either put therm on a board or use them to make a necklace or something. The appliance taxidermists use for the open mouth mounts look much better in the long run. JMO.

Those here who know me know im not the type to call people out or to lie about things like this. Just look up my post m sure you'll see a few with pics to verify.

I believe I have enough experience in this matter to say my piece. If you dont think so Ive got albums full of pics to verify my experience.

I'm not calling you a liar. I'm only stating I've never seen real teeth last very long without cracking, and falling out, or apart.

IF you've had such great luck and results. Congratulations, I'm happy for you.
I also expect you've treated them somehow differently than the taxidermists around Colorado have on a couple dozen animals I've seen and had mounted.

I do admire the hog hunting you guys do over there on the lava mtns. I enjoy reading all your posts to others and between each other.
George

Aloha George,

No worries I've never treated them as I'm not a taxidermist. I've jus seen thousands of boar heads here all done with real teeth and all are fine. Some are over 60+ years old I do know for a fact that the taxidermist here fill the void with epoxy or some other filler. Maybe because boars are the majority of animals mounted the taxidermist found a way to stop them from cracking.

Aloha,

Dom
