I live in Round Rock, just outside of Austin. If some of the hunters who have requested to hunt can't make it, I will be happy to volunteer. I would rather hunt pigs than deer. Send me a PM if this is a possibility. Thanks, Jerry Hoover

this would be a great occasion to host a DRSS and friends get together...if I bring two single shots, does that make me DRSS eligible? The perfect occasion to "blood" the 550 Gibbs.

Crusher, what kind of whiskey/scotch do you prefer...that means somebody else pays for it?

regards,

Rich

Aglifter: A big part of wiping them out...we did it succesfully on our place...is get your neighbors together and agree to let free roam across your properties while shooting, kill EVERY pig you see...plenty of highschool boys in jeeps and spotlights got rid of ours after about 4 years.

They say you can't get rid of pigs but you can come pretty close using this method. Because there's a fair amount of farming around my ranch pigs are regarded as vermin (they wiped out about a third of a neighbor's corn & milo crop). So, about twice a year the locals run up and down the Guadalupe River with dogs killing everything in sight (pigs). I don't particularly like it cause I enjoy hunting but I have to get along and remember my neighbors' livelihoods depend upon farming and cattle.

As far as we could tell it worked for us -- no more holes in fences, deer pop went back up, and so did the calf survival rate. I'm sure we didn't kill every hog, but the ones that were left moved on.

Now, I think one of the reasons why it worked was we were in the hill country, during a drought, so there were only a few supplies of water -- they had to come there to drink, and we killed them when they did. If you can deny pigs water, you can get eliminate them/greatly reduce their number.

With that said, "have gun, will travel" Big Grin and I don't need any of the meat, provided I don't have to butcher them.

Crusher:

Replied to your pm.
To keep things a bit more private, switch to e/mail instead, what do you think?

georgeld@hotmail.com

I'm in, and will help all I can regardless what's needed. BUT: had back surgery just over a year ago so my ability to walk, lift and such may very well be restricted at time's. I'll make it, but, suffer like hell from it, but, won't completely stop me.

I agree about killing only hogs/piglets etc.

What about snakes & coyotes? They out, or game too??? That's the things we need to find out about.

How big a place is this we'll be on? Well fenced, well marked etc??

Thanks, George

Yep, a great time was had by all. I'd like to be able to say that we really dented the population of hogs, but they weren't as cooperative as they should have been. Big Grin We managed to kill a few though. I'll post a few pictures and some more detail a bit later.

I don't really think you do, Pop... You don't want pigs up there. They destroy EVERYTHING, eat ANYTHING, and are pure vermin...

Nothing personal, but sometimes the only thing worse than wanting something is getting it...

no george, this was not culling, when times were good (we are in a drought at the moment)that would be a normal weeks hunting.

The photo below is when we were culling, and that usually meant 40 per day!!

Wow, that's the way we do prairie dogs, but, it take's a whole lot more than 40 of those to fill up a truck bed like this!!

So, what did you do with these? Is there money in it? or just kill 'em to get rid of 'em? I was told most hogs over there are full of worms and not good to eat. IS that true?

Thanks for sharing the picture.
Crusher, ain't you glad that's not at your place??

George

George, we were selling the pigs in the last photo for the human consumption export market.

The Germans and Polish folk love the taste of wild pork. There was good money to be made, but it was also hard work.

as for the worms, well yes old out back boars taken during drought conditions usually resort to eating carrion (dead animals like KANGAROOS AND SHEEP) and would then have intestinal worms, however each pig shot for human consumption would be tested before exporting them.
