Well, it's been a LONG time since I pulled the trigger on anything -- or even felt up to it, for that matter. But that changed right at dark today. A rogue boar showed up, and I had been looking through the window out to the open field where I had poured some "sow in heat" lure earlier in the day. There was a light drizzle falling, and the shooting light was all but gone. And, to be honest, I really wasn't prepared. But when I saw the dark blob zig-zagging through the huisaches, I grabbed my 24" 7-30 Waters and slipped out the door. Our dog Charlie sensed something was up and immediately took off, leaving me without time to gather myself and get a decent rest. All I could do was wrap the sling around my arm and take my chances with a rather hurried effort. The boar was facing me at a slight angle (probably looking at the yellow blob barreling towards him), and as soon as the heavy #4 crosshairs of the 2.5-10x56 dissected the chest, I touched off the G2 and sent a 140 grain C-T Ballistic Silvertip across about 180 yards of space. Recoil robbed my sight picture, but the unmistakable and audible "whap" of bullet impact was a great sound to hear. I could not see the hog in the grass and near-dark conditions, but Charlie was soon standing where I last saw the boar, so I hoped he was there and down for the count. To be on the safe side, though, I grabbed a Dan Wesson before cranking up the 4-wheeler and heading over there. When I drove up, the boar was where he last stood -- unmoving and out cold. The 140 grain bullet had entered slightly left of the chest's center and exited about an inch past the last rib on the hog's right side. The bullet tore through the very upper portion of the heart and demolished one lung before damaging a portion of the liver as well. The exit was small, between the size of a dime and nickel. Hog activity here has been slow, but yesterday, we noticed rooting along our driveway about 300 yards from the house. So we had put out some corn and about a half-bottle of the sow-in-heat urine as I figured this was likely a lone boar. With the cooler, drizzly weather, I had hoped to have a chance today but sort of gave up as darkness began to settle in. But I got lucky -- both with the hog's appearance and the shot. Sure feels good to treat the itchy trigger finger, too... Bobby Μολὼν λαβέ The most important thing in life is not what we do but how and why we do it. - Nana Mouskouri

Whop! and another one bite's the dust. Good stuff BT. Glad to see you can still whack. Dont'cha just luv it when you here the smack of a good hit. I think my favorite is in the early morn' when there is a mist and a lot of humidity in the air, but nary a breath of a breeze, and all is absolutely still. Say 200 to 250 yds to target. Ya fling a bullet and at that range, after the sound of the report, you can hear the whooow-whooow-whooow of the bullet slicing through the air, then the "whop" and the mortal scream of a dying hoglet. Absolutely primordial and something to be savored. Once more, "good on ya" BT JAPPF, GWB
