I had a bit of work to do this afternoon, one job being to shift a mob of cattle.
I was half way through shifting them when I looked up at a distant ridge to see a good Boar casually wandering off. I quieted my dogs, and shifted the mob with just a heading dog, then nipped home and picked up a special rifle.
Special in that my brother had just bought it, and it was chambered for 375 H&H. I loaded the only 4 rounds I could find into the mag, and raced off to the boars last known address. I soon found him a k or so from where I’d seen him, and started to stalk on in which didn’t take long. At 20 meters I paused as he disappeared behind a small bush in a sharp little hollow, I was beginning to regret not having brought my bow, but then an idea came to me, and I wound down the varipower to 3 x, chambered a round, and bent down and picked up a large rock, I was going to try and do this as “African” as I could.
I moved up to the track the pig had used and lobbed the rock over the boar to land a foot on the far side of him. Instantly he was coming my way, but unfortunately not right down the same path as me, as I’d kind of wanted a charge style situation. I shot him anyway at 15 paces. At first I thought I’d missed, as he turned back into the hollow out of my sight, but I was still reloading as he crested the rise 5 meters from me, now heading directly at me, sometimes you get what you wish for, and realize it might not be such a good thing.
I got the rifle loaded, but just as I was trying to get a bead, he reared up on his hind legs, completely vertical, and came crashing down on his back about 3 meters from me….Phew! I was rather relieved, and now realized that 3x is waaay too much magnification at that range. I stood there for a minute or two enjoying the sensation, before I walked up and stuck him, a nice young boar of about 130, and real fat, with inch tusks, I think I will get him made into Ham.

That's a bit bigger gun than my .22-250, but looks like it gets the job done just fine!!

Well Done. tu2

I want to have a variable scope no more powerful on the low end than 1.5x if it is on a gun I use when the animal might be running toward me. Eeker

If it is fixed power, I have used a 2.5x.

And strangely, I'll bet that .22-250 produces more bang-flops.

NE 450, I'll be trying to convince my brother to put detachable mounts on it. It has a nice set of open sights that are eminantly usable, and I reckon thats the best of both worlds.

I Understand the sensation! Once I had a 200lb boar caught in a small pond just before daylight. The dogs were working him well when he noticed I was shining a light on the situation. He came straight at me. I was in the only bare spot around the edge of the pond so I didn't have anywhere to go. Just as he was exiting the water I kicked him on the jaw and caused him to fall in the slick mud. This gave the dogs a chance to catch up and catch him again so I immediatly dispatched him.Now I try not to get in those situations if possible.

Good story and picture

Great story and pix.

I enjoy the 375 H&H on pigs from time to time. The one "triple" I've made was with the 375 H&H.

Here's a nice pig along with my Sako AV in 375 H&H

I'll have a 600 overkill by the end of june and I hope to set a record on the number of pigs killed with one shot.

That is a good looking boar! Where did you hit him? 3x at 15 yds is a bit much. I think my 600 gonna wear a
1.5-5x24Leupy.

Well done, nice boar.
Last week, i shot my first big Warthog (100 Kg) with my Sauer .375H&H at 130 meters.
It is amazing how such a caliber performs well from duiker´s to wildebeest´s (been the biggest trophy for me so far).

Enjoy this fine caliber.

Have a good hunting season
