Actually, if they really want to get rid of them, they should reclassify them as a pest animal and remove the tag fee. $20 a tag isn't too bad, but let's face it, it discourages people from making the effort to hunt them.

I will guarantee there are many more pigs than estimated; however, keeping a low estimate makes it look good when you kill half or more of the estimate. No doubt the BLM and USF will be as successful at this endeavor as Obama has been with his stimulus.

Just put a bounty out for them.
It does not have to be much, just a couple of bucks. You will have a lot of shot pigs in a hurry.
People just love bounties.

i second the bounty idea. i think that's the only way to deal with them and they still won't get them all.

Nah, just put them on the endangered species list, make them illegal to hunt and tell the cajuns how good they taste. Soon there will sure enough be a shortage!

It's hard to hunt them there because of all the private land, restricted access to public land, restrictions to types of weapons used in some areas and all the people.

There is so much misinformation in that story it is laughable... anybody that thinks hogs will plant acorns by pushing them into the ground has his head in his hindermost part. And pig meat is denser and heavier than deer meat? HUH? I thought a pound was a pound (and yes, I know about troy pounds and advordupois[sp] pounds).

Back when I was stationed in the land of Fruits, Flakes and Nuts, we used to shoot a lot of pigs. All I had to do was have a general hunting license and I could take them year round with no limit. I was in Northern California and used to shoot lots of them off the wine places in Napa. They didn't like the pigs tearing up the landscaping and the vines.

Put California decided to screw it up by making us buy tags. Originally it was 5 tags for around $7. Not a huge amount, but it made me quit hunting pigs. After all, how bad of a problem could they be if they insisted on making money from a species everyone agreed was causing problems. So, my pig shooting days in California ended when the state got greedy.

I have a hard time taking pity on any state with pig problems if they try to turn a profit on them. If the things are causing that many problems, they would be begging to have them shot. If they want to turn a buck on them, then they have a financial interest in keeping pig numbers viable.

There are simply too many places that allow you to shoot them for free year round. Why pay anything to shoot them?

1. As has been said, take them off the game animal list and declare them a nusance.
2. Do not charge any hunter a tag fee.
3. Do not put the hunters under all kinds of stupid Kalifornia style restrictions. They say most hunters are not succesful because the pigs are too smart or are too isolated. Im calling BS on that one. Let hunters shoot the same way your so called government professionals get to and I guarantee they will get the job done.
4.Open it up to out of state hunters. There are a lot of us who have a lot of experience shooting pigs bot day an night.
5. Put a small bounty of 5 to 10 dollars per pig maybe even less. Use ears and pictures for proof of kill. Let the shooters keep the meat if they want it. If not you could arrange with some slaughter houses and food banks/shelters to be able to use any meat salvaged. It is a shame to let them lay and rot but at times in a large scale culling operation it is necessary. Better to make a plan though.
6. Somebody is blowing political smoke up somebody elses ass and trying to make themselves look needed. I can understand the motive but not at the expense of the people you are supposed to be serving. This is especially true now given the current economics.

If you had a $ 100 bounty there would still be less $ expended and more hogs killed than having any combination of government involved. How many government types have you ever met that wanted to be out of their a/c office? Let alone trudge through the wilds carrying a gun and knife.
All the dead hogs should be cleaned and turned in for food banks to use, or just let the Hispanic community have them for pig roasts.

It might be the only way to do it. And it won't be gov't bureaucrats in the heli. Ranchers in one area around here bring in private heli shooters every couple or few years. They take out 500 to a thousand in a couple weeks.

A buddy and I just got on to a 20K acre ranch to hunt russian boar. Spent the first couple days there last week. Didn't connect but we're just getting started!

I lived in north San Diego county for 25yrs. The overwhelming obstacle to all hunting there is ACCESS. There is very little public land and the game is always concentrated on private property (posted private property). The public will scream the first time channel 8 shows a "gunship" killing/wounding baby hogs on some irate tree huggers private ranch. This will be really fun to watch!
