Reb You flatter me, and a good head shot is always my first choice of targets on hogs. A fellow AR/BlaserPro member, Ron Williams, and I are trying to do an experiment on some 285 gr PRVI bullets, and I plan to shoot my next hog with my Blaser Professional 9.3x62 in the shoulder for penetration testing. I check my game cameras everyday, and the dang hogs are completely nocturnal. I am trying to convince my wife that a night vision scope is a real necessity. (she ain't buying it, so I guess neither am I )

I have to disagree with the post about needing penetration to get into a hogs brain, I have shot a lot of hogs in the head with a .22 L.R. and a .222 Remington at ranges from 20 ft. to 100 yards and further with the .222. My favorite hog gun is a 6x45 with 75 gr. Barnes X at 2900 FPS....The hi vel 22s are even good on heart and lung shots for that matter..An average ferral hog of 100 to 150 pounds is fairly easy to kill IMO..The big 350 pound and larger Europeans are easy to kill with the 6x45, 25-35 Win. or larger calibers...My .416 works also.. Ray -- no one said anything about penetration required to get to the brain only that penetration is required when the brain shot is not available........ 308 win will be good at 200-300 yd for any pig smaller than 250 lbs. Above 250, keep it around 100-150 yds with a good quality bullet (barnes TSX) and you will be fine. Also, that 26" tube will give you a bit more velocity with the right powders... But, the flash will give you a bit of night scope blindness if the powders are too slow. My favorite boar cartridges are 44 mag, 458 win, 375 H&H, 340 Wby, and 30-06. Land plots in CA are a bit smaller so you don't want to see your pig in the neighbors yard aftge its shot if you can help it I wanna move to Texas, we can't use night vision in CA.

Big Bore Boar Hunter -- do you handload for your .340 Weatherby? If you do, what kind of speed are you getting out of it? "Ignorance you can correct, you can't fix stupid."
