First of all, I am not calling this hunting, but it sure did help cure an itchy trigger finger that's been festering for a few months now... Got a call from a friend at first light this morning telling me there was a boar in an open pasture about 2.5 miles from where I live. It was on a place I've had permission to since I was a kid, so I grabbed my 26" MGM 6.5 Bullberry IMP and drove over. Right after going through the gate, I spotted the hog, and it appeared he was oblivious to my presence, thanks to a nice breeze that muffled the sound of the truck. So I cut the motor, made the 10 yards to a solid rest and touched the trigger as soon as the crosshairs looked just right. Ranged after-the-fact, it appears the shot was right around 210 yards. The 129 grain Hornady SP took the boar tight behind the shoulder, demolished the lungs and exited through the opposite shoulder. The exit was fairly small -- about the size of a nickel. My best estimate on the weight of this boar would be about 170-175 pounds. Bobby Μολὼν λαβέ The most important thing in life is not what we do but how and why we do it. - Nana Mouskouri

OK, now is the pressure off? Or am I still supposed to kill that big boar? I know, dumb question. An old pilot, not a bold pilot, aka "the pig murdering fool"

dustoffer- Oh, this just doubles the pressure, right? Last week, my sister-in-law dropped off a DPMS with a 1:9 .223 barrel and a night vision set-up. It belongs to my father-in-law, and he wanted it sighted in. I finally felt well enough to look through it last night -- and I WANT it!!! I've never had night vision before, and though this is just a Gen1, it sure would have worked with the moonlight we had last night. Maybe I'll get to try it out before I return it. And maybe I'll tell him the batteries had to be special ordered and will be a few months... well done Bobby Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Thanks for the kind words! I actually gave this hog away because I just didn't have the strength or energy to deal with it this morning. But I had a pleasant surprise a couple hours ago when the gentleman came by the house and brought me a nice, large shoulder roast. I'll marinate it in the fridge overnight, put it in an oven bag tomorrow, load it with veggies, some appropriate seasonings, a bit of water and slow-cook it for several hours. (Thanks for the recipe, jeffeosso!!!) Should make for some good table-fare... Jim-Thanks! Let me know how much I owe you for them. Bobby--if you think looking through a night-vision device on a rifle is neat--just think about flying a chopper at 140mph down on the deck wearing them!! It's a hoot. An old pilot, not a bold pilot, aka "the pig murdering fool"

Marko- It felt REALLY good to dust off a rifle and pull the trigger on something, even if it was just a drive-by, so to speak. For someone who was used to being active and outdoors on a regular basis, being cooped up inside for much of these past few months has been driving me crazy (well, "more crazy" may be a better description ). But it felt like I had never even put the 6.5 down; it all came naturally, and I am thankful it retains zero so well.
